I'm currently applying to the academy and trying to get the VP nomination. I'm taking my Act in a few days and I'm just wondering, if I don't get appointed to the academy how good are my chances at getting into the prep school? I really want to attend the academy and I'll go through the prep school if need be, but I have no idea how difficult it is to get an offer to the prep school if you don't get one to the academy.

Yes, I have been wondering the same question. I heard somewhere that the prep school was offered to candidates that are physically sound, but have academic work to do; not sure if that’s true, though

Prep school for the SAs is generally reserved for those who have otherwise stellar credentials but are in need of some academic bolstering. Think of high-end athletes and prior enlisted, for example. Where the line is drawn for prep is anyone’s guess, as it’s known only to the admissions committees and no one on this forum has provided definitive information.

So what are your chances? Who knows. And really, you shouldn’t worry about it because it’s pretty much out of your control at this point. Do your best on the ACT and take it from there.
