Does anyone out there have a sense as to whether or not it hurts an applicant in any way to apply to both Air Force and Navy ROTC scholarships? Does it make it seem your are less "loyal" or serious to one service or the other by applying to both? Does that matter really toward selection? My DS preference is Navy but he would certainly serve in the Air Force and it opens more school options. Just wanted to get folks thoughts and experience

No - It does not hurt the application. In fact, I would guess that it is more common for an applicant to apply for multiple scholarship (NROTC, AROTC, AFROTC)s. Many of the ROTC applicants are also applying to multiple SAs. The mantra of this board is to have a Plan B, C D....... If your DS's goal is to commission into the armed forces, take advantage of every option available.

Good luck to your DS!

Applying to both or all of them has no impact on your application. If it comes up in an interview it's more likely to demonstrate one's commitment to serve. If awarded scholarships to both I, personally, wouldn't pick one or the other based on the school, but in which service one wants to spend 4-5 years (or perhaps longer) after college. Which one has jobs that are appealing? Which one has more second choice jobs you'd be interested in if you don't get your first choice? Which one has a lifestyle you feel more compatible with?

Good luck to your DS.

Not only does it NOT hurt...I continually recommend the following:

"If YOU, the applicant, not the parents or loved ones, are really interested in this, you should apply to a few Academies, ROTC programs, and civilian schools. The dilemma you want to find yourself in is: Your a senior....it's March...you applied to 3 Academies, 3 ROTC programs, and 3 civilian schools. You go to the mailbox or email in-box and you now have 9 letters of acceptance!!!! You've expanded your opportunities tremendously and put yourself in the driver's seat to select the one you really want...VERSUS...I always wanted to go to Academy X or Univ X on an ROTC scholarship and you're not selected that year.

EXPAND YOUR OWN OPPORTUNITIES:wiggle:

CONTINUED: As reinforced by 18Hopeful's son and thousands of others I've seen over my 28 years in this position:wiggle:

My son applied for NROTC and AFROTC scholarships, but did not apply to any Academies. He received both AF and Navy scholarships. Preferred Navy, and thankfully, received medical waiver from NROTC. Waiver denied by AFROTC. Advice: put in plenty of applications, expanding your options at the end as you don't know how it will all play out.

Great advice sc5 to keep max options open.. Interesting how the services/ROTC processes are so similar.....yet so different!!
