Appointment to CGAS

My daughter is CGAS at GMC. She was recruited softball at CGA. There is no way she would have time to play due to the strict academic schedule and military obligations while at school.
Did she choose not to play, or their choice/suggestion?

Per the Scholars web page, playing your sport at a prep school does not count toward the athletes’ 4 year NCAA eligibility as it is essentially a red shirt year and they can maintain contact with the USCGA coaching staff. All have a Merry Christmas.

I know that is true for Prep Schools (USMAPS, NAPS, AF Prep) because they do not compete against NCAA schools. However, I would check with coaches if you play a varsity sport at MMI (which is a NCAA Junior College) and compete against other NJCAA teams.

Congratulations to everyone! My DD has accepted an appointment to the Prep School. No phone call, the information was in her portal on CGA account 12-22-20. What academics are given for the year at Prep School? My DD has 31 college credits so I am very curious the classes she will be taking at the Prep School.

Calculus, English, Chemistry and Physics.

Congratulations!!! That is amazing! I know you are thrilled. The academics at the Prep Schools vary depending on which school your DD attends. My DD is at GMC and they are taking 26-27 credit hours per trimester. Like @momoftwo said, at GMC at least, there is very, very little time for anything other than academics. I have heard the other two prep schools do not require so many credit hours but I am not certain about that so you may want to ask parents of MMI or NAPS CC.

Again, BIG CONGRATS!!!

I don’t think the number of credit hours are important. Cadets will still do the four years at the academy. I believe the courses are the same at all 3 preps.

MMI is on semester schedule. 16 credits each semester - Freshman Composition (3 cr), Chemistry w/Lab (4 cr), Physics w/Lab (4 cr), College Algebra and Trigonometry for Calculus (3 cr), Military Science (1 cr), and Physical Training (1 cr).

If English 101 and 102, AP Chemistry, & AP Physics have already been taken then would she be able to skip those at the Prep School?

So regardless of prior academics, such as college credits for English, an incoming prep school student will still have to take these standard classes? Not that it really matters, I was just wanting information on the classes in general.
Thank you for all the information though. I really appreciate it!

My understanding is that they will all take the same core classes. The some more have more advanced classes but the subjects are all essentially the same.

Totally Agree - they all start at the same point at USCGA. I was just trying to point out that each Prep School does have it's own unique situation. Semesters vs. Trimesters, class that are required for their prep school (Army, Navy, etc.) military obligations, some encourage playing sports, some don't, Some have more off campus liberty, some have almost none, that type of stuff. I would encourage families to really ask a lot of questions before their CC puts in a request. While they all meet at the same start line, their experiences seem to have been vastly different. All good. Just, different. :)

DS received an appointment to the CGAS program last week. Also awaiting DoDMERB and looking for more information to be able to make an informed prep school option.
Look at the respective web sites for NAPS, GMC and MMI. When we were looking last year our major considerations were location (proximity to home) and ability for DS to continue with his recruited sport (football).

Because of this he went to NAPS. The biggest thing about NAPS is that it is obviously run by big Navy. Because of the situation with COVID this meant that he had very little opportunities to get off base and we had zero opportunities to visit him. From July to December they were only allowed off base around 5 times. Hopefully things will be better in 2021 but you should keep this in mind.

At MMI the CGAS cadets are taking the same subjects regardless of previous college courses. CGAS is a golden ticket that provides an appointment to the Academy if you meet CGAS standards for GPA, Ht/Wt and Physical Fitness test, and conduct.

DD offered position at CGAS. If they meet the qualifications after a year at prep (mentioned in the post above), do they have to reapply or is automatic appointment to CGA the following year?

They complete a shortened application.

No reapplication needed. There is some paperwork to be done and turned it but not the fun of the initial application.
