My DS just got back from NSI Session 2. His feet arent in great shape. He has blisters that never really got a chance to heal because the boots he was issued didnt fit right. He has 2 weeks until he reports to his school, so hopefully that will give his feet a chance to heal. The midshipmen instructors said that there is a list of boots that are permitted to be worn with the NWU. I'm looking to get him a pair that fit better, are more comfortable and are lighter than the steel toe ones he was issued. Does anyone know what boots are permitted or is there a link to a page or site that lists the boots?

Thanks!

He should contact his unit as they would have correct guidance for him. Hope his feet heal soon!

he should talk to his unit about authorized boots. My unit for instance, only allows the wear of black, steel-toed 9in boots with type 3s unless we're doing a boots/utes workout. Also boots need to be broken in. That obviously takes time. I thought my boots were a crappy fit at first, but now more than two years in, I can run in my steel toes without issue. Here's the navadmin detailing all the various boots. See P.4

Edit: the above boots are all the different types of boots authorized for wear with the type 3 uniform, but his unit CO may restrict the list (example: my unit).

Striker Torrent side-zip 8” black Danner boots and Smart Wool socks. Blister bandaids might be helpful for him until the blisters are healed. I also suggest the ENGO brand blister prevention patches. These handy patches are placed inside your footwear in any “hot spots” to prevent friction and irritation to the skin. Hope this helps!

Suggest your DS research proper foot care and advice from backpacking resources.
I agree. I also would have thought that might be an "academic session" held during NSI. I'm surprised there wasn't one (evidently).

Now that you are "in." Always go to your chain of command with questions. Don't listen to us knuckleheads.

What’s that?
Where you sit down and hear a brief about something for the sake of actually learning instead of being motivated by what a small school on the Severn River calls “positive pressure with a purpose.”

Striker Torrent side-zip 8” black Danner boots...
Not sure what NROTC requires, but side-zip boots are strictly a no-go for USNA Midshipmen. My DS has never been required to wear his steel toe boots. They are as clean and shiny as the day he got them. Black is correct, however.

Best advice, there.

Order thicker softer black socks to wear with boots, they will help. My DS said boots are comfortable with thicker socks and once broken in.
