Are guitars allowed?

I know this might seem like a dumb question but I just really like playing guitar and was curious if I'll be able to have one as a freshman, or if I can ever have one, or if I have one if it needs to have an amp and headphones so I don't bother people. Thank you!

Probably not something you bring to the first day of BCT. However, I had a full drumset shipped to USAFA as a freshman and I stored it under the chapel. By the time Parents Weekend rolls around, you will have a much clearer idea of what is acceptable. Each unit has a storage room assigned to them, and you can put things like that there. You do have limits on the number of items of memorabilia that you are allowed by grade year, and I suspect it is not a good idea to have the guitar in your room as a 4*.

My son was asking the same question. He wanted to pack his guitar.

Remember you will be lugging whatever you bring and then come when you report. Some things are better left until later, especially since there probably will not be a chance to use them.

See all the advice about going light, lugging stuff around all day, taking what’s on the list, getting through the summer and seeing what makes sense, what the norm is, what will not make him stand out on his first day. Get the guitar to him later.

Unlike the unforgettable...Box Boy. Still famous since 2009.

See link below. Have fun with the images that pop up when googling “USAFA Box Boy.”

My son has his Gibson SG at USNA, with a headphone amp. He waited until Thanksgiving to bring it, having figured out the lay of the land. I would suggest taking a wait and see approach.

Have your parents bring it during parents weekend and just consult an upperclassmen and/or AOC as to what the proper storage is since standards are always being changed. I think a third of my squad has some sort of musical instrument in their possession at the academy haha

While you DON'T want to bring a guitar to In-Processing Day, you could have it shipped to your sponsor family's home (or brought by your parents during Parents Weekend) to play there when you visit & until you get approval to have it in your dorm room.

We took my DS ('23) his mini Martin to him over Thanksgiving. He decided on the mini because of storage issues, he was in a 3 man room, but may take one of his electrics and his tiny Orange amp with him when he has a few more privileges/room.
