Army-Navy 2023

What is the significance of that train?

It's a special train that runs between downtown Boston and the stadium for special events including the Patriots games and concerts. Hopefully they'll have them for the Army-Navy game too. The game is not in Boston.

Do Plebes get to go to the game? If they do get to go, do they have any free time? I'm guessing no on the second question, but thought I'd ask. I'm wondering if I should be planning a trip to Foxborough. Thanks.

All football games at home are mandatory, and Army-Navy is most definitely mandatory. There is the big March On! The Brigade and Corps make up two massive seating areas. Even restrictees go. Oh-dark-thirty bus rides are part of the ritual. They are in a duty status until after the schools’ alma maters are sung.

Too early to know what the post-game liberty deal is for plebes. That’s a lot farther away than the usual Philly trip.

As an upperclass, they have options of taking weekends and taking care of their own transportation. They also make all kinds of fun plans with their friends.

You should definitely attend an A-N game in person at least once. Plebe year may not be the best choice.

And - Foxboro in December…🥶

What’s been *proposed*: for Plebes (mandatory) heading out via bus early Friday morning, overnighting at a convention center Friday night (cots/separate male/female areas), and busing to the game Saturday morning at the appropriate time. Post game, buses leave within an hour and arrive back to usna early Sunday morning (an approximate 8hr-ish drive). Optional for upperclass.

For upper class: same bus option, or independent travel, including flying/driving and hotel, at their own expense. Including upcoming youngsters.

It’s not unusual that plebes aren’t allowed to overnight/independent travel with family. At least the last 5 years I’ve been involved. But you should be able to ‘visit’ with them during the game at designated times. Plebe year isn’t the best one for family time. And even with family time as an option, my boys always wanted to hang, party and celebrate with company mates and friends. Not us. Our fun is with other parents (tailgates) and brief visits with our guys.

If you are going, book your hotels! They are getting scarce as it’s also the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. Should be lots to see and do!!

*proposed, subject to finalized plans*

BTW, Jet Blue has non-stop flights between BWI and BOS. Cheap.

I'm curious to see the additional logistical considerations in place for the proposed movement of the Plebes and willing upperclass. The following are rhetorical:

1. If it is 8 hours, why not drive through the night on the way there? Sure, a bus is not the best way to get sleep, but it renders the convention center moot.
2. What will the logistics look like in the background? How will the cots get there and back? Send staff? Send an advanced team of MIDN?
3. How will the MIDN eat and shower? Provide catering? Let them go out on liberty? Give them MREs? Bring in portable showers?

I guess where I am going with those is that I feel that, while it is proposed, there is a lot of extra logistics that go into something like that. Curious to see what USNA does!

Guessing here.
1) May be a test run, as they have indicated wanting to expand the footprint. If this works, then it opens up Cincinnati to Charlotte without having to fly.
2) Providence Journal article mentioned Kraft family in charge of renting conv center, so likely they will purchase and donate cots, handle all logistics in that regard.
3) Similar to 2, the place sounds like it can handle large catering events. So, likely it would feed them. Many of these places have lockerrooms for sporting events, so assume that is covered.

*Proposed*

Cots in the center are provided by the Red Cross. So no moving those.

Showers in set up shower trailers.

Lunch on the bus on the way down. No cost dinner option available. Continental breakfast (prepackaged) in the morning.

What I wonder about, is where Will USMA be lodged?

It’ll be an adventure, that’s for sure. To @Usnavy2019 point, I bet there probably would be more sleep on the bus, than at the center 😆 2k young adults, arriving well rested from the 8 hr nap on the bus. What could go wrong??

DS (c/o '25) and buddies are opting to do their own travel. Looking at driving or train with maybe a stop in NYC. I worry they won't consider all aspects of an operation of this nature. However they are adults and in two years will be planning much more intricate operations so let them try this trip with little oversight from dad. Of course I will be involved enough to provide the risk oversight to minimize chance of failure. ;)

FYI Jet Blue has 99$ each way. Mine is leaving Thursday evening and returning Sunday afternoon. Non stop.

They also have an agreement with American Airlines, where you can book through them if you are an AA Advantage member (and get AA points).

Have they been authorized to travel on their own or is this just advanced planning purpose?

Travel by Bus, Train or car on their own with a stop in NYC. Hope they have a week.:) Eight hours straight through by car with no traffic. Port Authority Terminal is not the greatest place to see NY but look South East and you can see the Empire State Building. Neither is Penn (Moynihan) Station. But they can say they have been there.

I don’t think it’s technically been finalized. It was a survey, seeing what interest was. And for planning buses, etc, I would assume.

But it was proposed. Not final.

I am looking to surprise my friend, a plebe, at the game this year. I myself would be a 1st year NROTC student, does anyone have any insight on how I may best do this. Should I approach my XO or buy tickets through the stadium?

There are many ways to get tickets. I’m a big fan of StuHub, where for some reason, the prices for A-N seem less inflated than usual for a sold-out game. There’ll be plenty of availability up to the day of the game. Make sure you do give your friend a heads-up at some point, because they have responsibilities during the game re where to be and when to be there.
