Army ROTC Boards

Yes 4 & 3 YR- The 1st Board is all 4 Year. From there its a mix. Historically there are usually about 3000 scholarships awarded each year. 25-30% +/- of these typically are awarded towards four year scholarships. 70%ish +/- are usually Advanced Degree scholarships covering full tuition for last three years.
Thank you for explanation.

@Carlooo - I just looked back at some of your previous posts. You mention that your SAT is/was a 1210. That is not going to make the cut on the 1st board - most likely won't cut it on the 2nd or 3rd. Definitely do not submit for the 1st board with a 1210.

I could not disagree with this statement more. Your 1210 on the SAT will almost surely knock you out of the running on the first board, but it in no way eliminates you from consideration on the 2nd or 3rd board. The quality of your packet taken as a whole matters to the scholarship. Two years ago, my son had a 1250 SAT score. He was also a varsity letter winner in swimming, in a number of clubs, and held every leadership position possible in his four years in JROTC, to include BN Commander. He also nearly maxed the PFA. All of those aspects weighed together eventually earned him a 3 year scholarship in the 2nd board that materialized into a 4 year scholarship on the third board. This issue about SAT scores comes up across this forum, particularly with the academy side. But admissions and the scholarship boards still look at from the whole candidate perspective, even if the SAT is a heavy weight in that consideration.

My son received a 3-yr national scholarship. His SAT score was the weakest part of his profile in my opinion (not knowing how the interview went). Good GPA and a lot of solid leadership experience. His SAT was 1260. The 1st board is all 4-yr scholarships and the others will be both 4-yr and 3-yr. There haven't been 2-yr through the national scholarship that I'm aware of. Those are campus-based.
My son has exact same SAT score and also a good GPA. He applied for the second board and was just defered to the third board. Did your son receive his scholarship on the second or third board ?

He received his on the 2nd board. I can say that he wasn't so high on the 2nd board that it got bumped to a 4 year after the 3rd board which is what happened to a friend of his.

There's always the campus-based scholarships, so don't give up hope if he doesn't get awarded on the 3rd board. Someone posted that their child got a 3.5 year campus-based scholarship, which made me feel like earning the 3 year national wasn't as great a benefit as I thought. However, definitely nice going into the start of college knowing where you stand.

3.5 Yr campus based scholarships are very rare.

Is there a chance that a 3 year could go to a 4 year in the 3rd board or are they set upon getting the award at home priority mail? TY

In years past, there have been upgrades on the 3rd Board. No one knows how many, if any, will be upgraded this year. Good luck!

Hey everyone! Just thought I’d come back here after a few months. Kind of funny to see how stressed out I was back in October! Anyways, happy to say my initial 3 year got upgraded to a 4 year scholarship! So excited!😁
Congratulations! What school will you attend??

Hi, Congratulations! I have a question. My DS has received and accepted the 3-year ROTC scholarship awarded to him but, at the same time, he is still waiting for USMA acceptance. Is it too early (before he knows about USMA) or too late (already accepted his 3 year-scholarship) to request an upgrade on the scholarship to be a 4-year?

I’m not exactly an expert, but I don’t believe you can request an upgrade on the scholarship. I believe that Cadet Command decides who gets an upgrade from 3 to 4 year (anyone please correct me if I’m wrong). I don’t think accepting the scholarship right now is binding, so what I’ve done in my case is accepted the AROTC scholarship while waiting for NROTC and USNA.

You don't request an upgrade. The Army gives upgrades at their discretion based on how the final boards go.

My son got an email out of the blue last week with his upgrade. He was part of the second board. So, crossing fingers that you can expect the same for yours.
