Army ROTC increasing interest in STEM (Science, Tech, Eng, Math) majors

I'll be interested in seeing how things work out with DS, as he's a 3AD. Already know that in terms of uniform and gear he's all squared away (good thing they gave him a locker at the armory so that he has room in his dorm closet for clothes). First FTX this weekend, will see what that was like in terms of 4YS, non-scholarship, non-contracted and the rest.

The one thing I do know is that DS is doing this because it's the college he wants to be at, both in terms of getting an education and being a cadet in their AROTC battalion, and after commissoning serving the U.S. in whatever capacity they ask him to. Yeah, might be biased because I'm his Dad, but I'm proud of him.

The one thing my older son has said regarding contracted and non contracted cadets was this. The cadets that were looking toward contracting as either a 3 year AD, SMP, or contracting their junior year all worked extremely hard, showed up for every event and participated in all the activities. He also said that no one was treated any differently by the upperclass whether they were contracted or not, those that worked hard gained the same respect. It didn't take long to see who was serious about the program. He agrees that the only real benefit of a scholarship is the money, it in no way makes them a better cadet, a few of the top cadets in his battalion were not on scholarship. The only real downside to being non contracted is that you can't attend some of the summer schools such as Airborne until you are contracted. I would imagine they ay loosen that restriction as less scholarships are given and fewer underclassmen are contracted.

With a 3 yr AD they will be treating your son as a contracted cadet and will expect more from him since he will contract next year. Congratulations to your son. It's great to watch the beginning of this journey that are on. We should all be very proud of our kids.

PS. Isn't it amazing how much gear they gave them, my son was lucky enough to find a storage closet in the Frat to keep it all otherwise he would probably be sleeping on top of it.

STEM and Nursing

The Army ROTC has four ADMs plus Nursing:
1: Engineering
2: Hard Science and Math
3: Social Sciences, Finance
4: Humanities

My son has his AROTC application ready to go for the first board. He thinks he wants to get his Bachelor of Science in Nursing and specialize in Critical Care/Trauma. Where does the nursing field fit in the STEM? Is it completely separate?

If your son is serious about nursing he should apply for the AROTC Nursing Scholarship program ( I am probably wrong on the exact name) With this program he would be dedicated Nursing, when he branches he will automatically branch into Nursing given he passes the nursing exam. He would not go through the normal branching but would be required to branch nursing.

There is a cadet that has posted here named Aglahad, who is in AROTC Nursing, they may be able to help answer your questions.

If he starts school and then decides to go the nursing route there are ways to shift in that direction. Talk to the ROO and PMS at his top choice schools and they can give you more information regarding the nursing program.

Nursing is essentially taken out of the general OML and nurses compete in their own OML. In addition, nursing scholarships come out of a different $$$ pool then line cadets. As JCleppe previously said, I am a senior nursing cadet and would be happy to answer any AROTC nursing related questions you have.

Bop28: Nursing is the higherst priority, higher than Engineering. This past Year Group 2011 hit its Nursing target for 2nd LT for the first time in years, actually about 30 over the target. Nursing is of the highest priority in Army, Navy and AF ROTC programs.

The private sector can secure non-US citizen nurses from the Philippines and other locations, but the military does not have that luxury... they have to really push to hit those targets.

Direct commissions also supplement most of the military nurse corps slots. I would say the majority of army nurses are direct commissioned. Yes, we finally made goal for FY11 and I hear of some nurses being forced branch reserves if their OML is too low which is usually uncommon.

Did my son apply for the wrong scholarship- 4yr AROTC-? When you say the Nursing Scholarships come from a different pool, are you referring to the last 2 yrs of school when he would be a Junior entering the nursing clinicals program? Or, is there actually an AROTC Nursing 4 yr scholarship?

Bop28: "Or, is there actually an AROTC Nursing 4 yr scholarship?"

Well, yes, there is an actual Scholarship that stipulates NURSING as the major. That is a ADM (Academic Discipline Mix) 5 scholarship if you are looking at the detail. You cannot change a Nursing ADM 5 scholarship to any other form of Scholarship.

As far as the APPLICATION goes, as far as I remember, the applicant checks the NURSING box in one of the the first Application pages... but I don't know b/c DD applied for a Regular (not Nursing) scholarship as a BIO major.

Engineering Info

Just learned this and thought it may be more appropriate for this discussion thread. This is related to Army ROTC

My son recieved a "4 year scholarship" and on the letter it was labeled engineering. Now based on some of the stats people have posted about there future cadets, I would be inclined to believe that he got seleced ahead of some because of his choice of major (Engineering).

In his case the school he was named to did not accept him and we asked the ROO what to do about transfering the scholarship. They suggested a cross town school and then transfer to the engineering school in 1-2 years.

The transfer was accepted but now there is pushback from CC because the cross town school he is at taking "engineering prerequisites" is not listed as an engineering school.

The moral of this story for those embarking on this?

1) If you list engineering on your scholarship application as a major- you may get it and be locked in to an engineering school.

2) I don't know this, but my suspision is, if you contract with an engineering scholarship, changing majors from engineering in the future may impact your scholarship.

3) FYI an engineering scholarship is apparently a 10 semester scholarship ( 5 years)despite saying 4). This is another reason for potential problems in changing majors.

Not sure how this will impact my son yet, but hope this is helpful for others.

Good luck to the class on 2012

NewCollegeParent -- sorry to hear about CC pushback on swithing from ADM1 to ADM 2 or 3 or whatever your son has listed as his major.

I agree with you that an applicant with lower adacemic, leader or sports stats could be offered a scholarship 100% b/c of Engineering as the major (same holds true for Nursing, btw). The Catch22 on this is that though the Army prizes its future engineers, most admissions committees at colleges require HIGHER stats of applicant engineers than of say, applicant undeclared majors.

There is a moral to the story for future/current applicants:

MAKE SURE AT LEAST ONE OF THE SEVEN SCHOOLS ON YOUR APPLICATION IS A "safety" school... meaning the applicant's stats are in the top 15-20% of last year's admitted students for SAT/ACT, GPA and/or Class Rank, and the family can afford the school without any form of merit scholarship... be that academic, athletic, or ROTC.

It is a tough situation for CC *and* the scholarship awardee if a scholarship is given for use as an ADM1 at a Battalion at a College that doesn't accept the applicant through Admissions.

No worries, I am sure he got a 4-year nursing scholarship. There are usually a 1-1.5 years of pre reqs then the actual school is 3-3.5 years. It should all be covered except maybe the last semester if it goes over 4 years. Also, ROTC will pay for extra credit hours if you are over standard load with nursing. Mil Sci often pushes you over.
