Hello everyone, I'm currently applying for an Army ROTC scholarship and hope to get reviewed by the second board (I didn't have my package ready by the first board deadline). In my application portal, it says that the deadline for document submission for the second board was 12/30 and also says that PMS interviews must be submitted by 1/10. However, on the Army ROTC's official instagram account (@armyrotc), one of the posts says: "To be considered for the January board, have your application complete by Monday, January 6". Can anyone shed some light on this discrepancy?

My son received an email from a ROTC representative from one of his schools that says he has until Friday January 10! We are thrilled and hustling mightily to get his PMS interview ASAP! He spent many months on NROTC - MO and started very late on Army ROTC after researching the awesome opportunities and ability to accept a fine university honors program.

Wow, that's great news for your son! With many colleges still on winter break, how are you going about scheduling PMS interviews under such a tight deadline? I've tried calling and emailing my ROTC representative from one of the schools on my list and have yet to receive a response.

We found out today, January 3rd, a Friday! At 5pm!! Son would have been calling like crazy this week to schedule an interview! The email said to call and call until he lands an interview. But we don’t know how to do this, starting Monday the 6th and still be respectful. So he will pray and call and explain very nicely and be ready to haul it to an interview. We have friends in the two fine schools in state in Army ROTC so now our son may call them to see if they can help him get in touch with the PMS.

I saw this as well, and I've been trying to get in touch with Cadet Command about some technical issues I may be having, and if that'll affect my status for consideration under the Second Board.

For anyone else who has more experience, if calling repeatedly doesn't produce a response, would you recommend just showing up at the school's ROTC office (well-dressed) and asking politely for a last-minute appointment before the deadline? Or would this seem to pushy/rude/demanding?

Most schools are still on break, so not surprising you didn’t get a hold of anyone last week. I would call on Monday and see if they can get you in for an interview this week (might need to check other schools depending on break schedules). If you can’t reach the ROO, call the admin assistant (that is who DS talked to to schedule the interview). The earlier in the week the better. My DS scheduled his for the Friday morning before the first board. He wasn’t expecting to be seen by the first board (and wasn’t). He was turned to board ready the following Monday. Good Luck!

I would not suggest calling repeatedly and I would not advise showing up unannounced. If they are there they will answer the phone or get back to you.

I would not do that. Those guys are busy getting ready for the new semester to show up unexpectedly.

You may get that rare PMS/ROO who would appreciate the persistence by standing in their lobby dressed for a non-scheduled interview.

My gut tells me showing up and hoping for an interview wouldn’t be fruitful though.

Keep trying to get that interview the conventional way.

@Osprey @GoCubbies Thanks for your advice! I'll try calling the ROO or administrative assistant first thing on Monday then. As for calling other schools, most of the colleges/universities nearby belong to the same ROTC battalion so they share the same ROO, but the schools belonging to the two other closest ROTC battalions aren't on my list. Should I still try calling them to get a PMS interview even if the schools aren't on my list?

IMHO, go with the one on your list if you can..but not a huge deal if you can’t. On your portal you should have a list of schools (with phone numbers) that are closest to you. My DS decided to go to the closest school (not on his list). His 3 top schools are plane rides away, so decided that was not worth it - and he is happy with that choice. It was certainly a lot less stressful getting there.

Absolutely. Try to get an interview at the location most convenient for you since you’re in a time crunch even though the school is not on your list. The AROTC scholarship process is set up so you can interview at the school of your choice whether it be the school you want to actually go to or one that’s near you.

One caveat based on my DD’s experience. None of the 5 closest schools were any of the 7 she listed in her app.

When she called the schools to set up an interview, 3 of the schools requested to be put on her list. We didn’t think it was right. The ROOs said listing them in her top 7 would allow them to see her full file.

Not wanting to make a big stink about the request, I told my DD to just go ahead replace her #7 school with the school closest to us just so they can interview her. I figured the chances of AROTC actually giving her the 7th school on her list was really low so I didn’t think she’d be risking too much.

She interviewed at the closest school (7th on her list) in early July. A week or so after the interview was done, she changed out that #7 school with her true #7 preference. In essence, her list of 7 went back how it looked originally before she started calling around for interviews.

@GoCubbies @Osprey Thanks again for the advice! I did some googling and realized that most of the schools near me are still on break. Would it be possible for their ROTC offices to still be staffed?

Yes. It’s likely the ROTC offices have staff working.

Things might be slow in the office with the students gone so you may get lucky and they may be able to fit in an interview.

Our son landed a PMS interview for Wednesday morning at the highly selective public university nearby where he hopes to be accepted next weekend. He thought he missed the 2nd Army ROTC Board, then got the email late Friday telling him he had this week to submit!
