Is is possible to switch from AROTC to NROTC MO after the MS 1/MS 2 years without having to make up the first 2 years of NROTC?

Or the opposite NROTC to AROTC without having to go to basic camp to make up for MS1/MS2 years? Or would they need to attend AROTC basic camp to commision with their Rook, Rat, Knob, Frog class.

The scenario would be if a cadet attends one of the SMC and decides to switch programs in the spring on the sophomore years, Army to NROTC MO or NROTC to Army.

Cadets change their mind after a few years, majors change, needs of the service change as well, etc.

Do MO attend a version of "leatherneck" or do they attend PLC the summer before their junior year?

If going from AROTC to NROTC MO how would this play into attending the summer training requirements to contract MO.

I know non-contracted NROTC Marine Options who have switched to AROTC. I assume the reverse is possible but I've never seen it. Marine Options do Bulldog/OCS for 6 weeks in summer after junior year at Quantico.

Agree with recommendation to speak with the recruiting officers from each branch. Ask them about your financial and service obligation if you leave after participating in training after 1 year, to go to another branch, or SA. Ask about completing all four years of labs/ foundational training in an accelerated timeline. Ask about summer camps/ cruises and how this would work. Certainly people have switched. I don't know how many do it after 2 years. Switching to the academies, you "Start over" as a plebe. Switching branches after 2 years? Please look into it and keep the board posted with what you learn, to help others.

Are you looking to be on scholarship? If so confirm what you would owe back to the Navy if you switched to Army, and visa-versa after 2 years. All, nothing? You should go in eyes open.

I wouldn't look to start in a new branch in year 3 without completing the training from the first two years. The training between AROTC and NROTC is not universal, like a carburetor part you can switch from a honda accord to a civic. I've sat in on many ROTC labs at university (specifically before my child started in ROTC) and you would be at a huge disadvantage - for example going to summer camp in Army but not knowing navigation, how to hone in on mortar targets, just to name 2. How could you lead others in your later years and after you commission, when you don't know so much that your peers were trained in? I recommend you switch your focus away from not "having" to make up the first years to "Ensuring" you have the opportunity to complete the training covered in the first two years so you are prepared to serve as a leader - deployments are sometimes into the theater of combat - you need to be ready - the people you lead will count on you. As will your peers/ superiors. OK, that's all - it's Easter. time to focus on happiness, bunnies, zoom meetings with dispersed family, and to negotiate wth my kids for the candies they don't want from their baskets. Good luck.

The scenario I was inquiring is a cadet non-contract non-scholarship.

I'm guessing it would be an easier transition from NROTC MO to AROTC, worse case would be that the cadet would have to attend basic camp at Knox to make up for MS 1/MS 2 years. Kids show up at basic camp straight out of HS for NMMI and MMI or cadets with 2 years of college ready to go into MS 3 year after basic camp.

I will do as suggested and contact a AROTC/NROTC program.

The information is for my son he plans to attend a SMC but is all over the place as far as AROTC or NROTC MO. He is a jr in HS so he has some time to decide.

At least at SMCs (not sure about civilian schools), it happens quite often. More so NROTC or AFROTC to AROTC around the second year mark. Reasons for is knowing they are not going to get a contract, or not passing the AFOQT, etc. More than likely you'll have to go to basic camp though.

There has been students going from AFROTC or AROTC to NROTC. I actually convinced someone to go NROTC whenever she told me she couldn't pass the AFOQT and she was going to be DQ'd from field training. She joined the battalion second semester sophomore year (the last semester you can join), and earned advanced standing over the summer (tier III with no calculus or physics done).
