AROTC - first or second board

But...then if he doesn't submit the app until the second board, his ACT score may not be any better, and he missed a third opportunity to be reviewed by the board.

Remember that AROTC Superscores the ACT, make sure you look at his scores from his two previous tests and average the top score in each section. My son took the test three times and took scores from each test for his final score.

I can relate to your testing question, even after my son took the ACT three times he still was only able to get a 24, the PMS at his #1 school choice told him that 24 was a number he should reach, it puts them into a different score category. I understand about test anxiety, you read that a low score can relate to poor performance in college......son graduated in May with a 3.7 GPA, guess the test Gurus were off a bit.

I would advise your son to try and get at least a 24 Superscore ACT if he can.

.but IMHO, the chances of getting a 4yr scholarship off of the first AROTC board without a high SAT or ACT are low. It happens, but it appears to be rare.

People are right, the first board is competitive, but test scores and GPA are only one part of the equation. My younger son had a 3.5 with a 24 ACT, not top 5% by any means. Based on just that he would never be in line for a first board scholarship. There are two other equally important sections, Athletics and Leadership, my son had a very strong resume in both these sections, another consideration is school selections, my son did not have extremely competitive schools listed other then maybe Oregon State. He received a scholarship the first board to 5 schools, all 4 year.

You never know how things will line up with the applications, there are so many factors that go into the process. Too often when people ask another applicant their stats they only get GPA and Test Scores, that's not enough to get a total picture of the applicant, it truly is a "Whole Person Score" combined with School selections that tell the entire story.

Thanks Jcleppe, I hoped I would hear from you!
