Ask a Norwich University Rook Anything

Hello!

I just submitted my application yesterday!

So far, what is your opinion about the school, as compared to a place like The Citadel, or VMI..

I'm leaning highly towards the Citadel right now, but Norwich looks really cool

Thanks in advance!

I'm a current recruit/rook and Norwich University and would love to answer any questions any prospective students might have. I didn't have the opportunity to speak to any cadets before I enrolled so I'm trying to extend a branch I didn't have when I checked the box.
Can you take a look in the luggage storage room on the 2nd deck, Goodyear - I am missing a pair of skis. They are 1990 vintage....

Congrats on choosing Norwich. My only advice is to take each day as it comes, break it down into bite size pieces and prepare for those pushups in 2 feet of snow! Thank you for paying it forward to future cadets. Good luck to you!

Has it snowed there yet?

good job on the application you will hear back very soon.

Being transparent, I did not look at VMI or the Citadel. Norwich reached out, I did research and decided to apply. From what I've heard from my cadre/upperclassmen, VMI and Citadel treat you better but there are major problems with hazing and people acting like they're superior just because they're in the corps or have a higher rank than someone.

I love the corps. My experience has been great so far and I think a big part of it is having amazing cadre and rook siblings (rooks in my platoon). Though I will say the corps is not for everyone so please do some contemplation and ask any questions you can. It's only week three and the corps have had at least 20 people switch to civie. The food is meh, academics are great, barracks could be better (obviously). But there is a lot of opportunities to get out and try new things if you keep an open mind

Class of 2018 Norwich Grad here. Available to answer questions about the whole Norwich experience from rook year to upperclassmen life to commissioning.

In terms of Norwich compared to the citadel or VMI, I may be able to help out. I have experience with all three. VMI is smaller and 100% Cadets. Best way to describe VMI is an old-fashioned version of West Point (which may be why VMI is called the West Point of the South!)
Norwich and Citadel, in my opinion. are most similar in terms of size and mix of cadet students, non-Cadet students, and online students. Both schools have unique traditions and offer their students, cadets and non-Cadets the opportunity to purchase rings and participate in athletic programs, etc. Biggest difference between Citadel and Norwich is one is in the south and one is in the north!
All three are great options. So best of luck wherever you decide to go!

I think I'd like the Citadel more, lol... one due to the literal location; South I'd rather be warmer during the Winters.

I'm going to visit The Citadel on October 22, so I hope I can get a better perspective.

Totally understand! I’d rather be warm than cold too!
Are you going to be in the Citadel’s Corps of Cadets or one of the the other programs?

You are right about Norwich is the North and the Citadel is the South. When we first visited Norwich it took me a minute to process that we were in the North. We visited the town square where there was a statue of a Civil War soldier with "GAR" instead of what we are use to in the South, "CSA". Norwich is in a rural area with great down home "country people". We visited the local American Legion hall and the folks there treated us like neighbors. VMI is rural with the awesome small southern town of Lexington. Norwich and VMI are in the hills where the Citadel is in a large coastal city. Citadel has a nearby major airport so getting to and from the post is quite easy. Norwich and VMI do not have airports nearby so transportation to and from post takes some planning. All three are great school. DS was accepted by all three but with an ROTC scholarship Norwich picks up room and board making and ROTC scholarship a full ride. Good luck with your decision.
