What happens to athletes during sea year? Do they miss the season for that year? Is the volleyball team or basketball team missing an entire class of players every season?

For the athletes, it isn’t really a continual “year”. It is split into two portions, an A-split and a B-split, depending on the sport. Essentially, a portion is completed during 3rd class year and another portion during 2nd class year See
Sea split chart for further explanation.

The sea year split assignments are made according to sport to minimize the time missed. Remember that it only affects third class and second class midshipmen. If the team is in playoffs, bowl game, etc. (depending on the team) players can often delay reporting to their ship until the season is over.

That chart is outdated. Starting with the Class of 2024 a C split was added.

That's incorrect. The C split affects First Class men who will not return until the fall. Delaying sailing for a sport could mean not having the required sea days to graduate. ATR's are struggling to find enough ships due to embarc, delaying sailing when you are offered a ship would be crazy.

Not according to the schedule I linked to in my post. 1st class year appears to be unaffected by sea year.

Like I said, the chart is out of date. You are wrong, the Academy added a C split which is not in your chart. 1689185133897.png

You are correct. The Academic Policies Handbook (08/25/2022) has the following text:

"DESIGNATION and CHANGE of SAILING SPLIT
The Office of the Academic Dean and Provost will require Fourth Classmen to indicate their sea period split preference by the end of the first residential term. “A” Split Midshipmen go to sea during their fifth, eighth, and ninth terms. “B” Split Midshipmen go to sea during their fourth, seventh, and eighth terms. “C” Split Midshipmen go to sea during their sixth, ninth, and tenth terms. An athlete will remain in her or his sea split even if the midshipman leaves the team. The Office of the Academic Dean and Provost reserves the right to assign a midshipman to any sea split.

No changes to a student’s sea split will be accommodated after the final day of the Add/Drop period at the beginning of Term 2 of the 4th class year."
