Awaiting waiver, what happens if...

My son was a first round AROTC 4 year scholarship winner. He’s awaiting waiver decisions for two DoDMERB issues. Wondering what happens if they don’t get resolved by May 1st? We can’t afford his ROTC choices without the scholarship. And waivers are probably a 50/50 chance right now. We don’t feel comfortable taking a chance and having him accept his ROTC choice on the chance the waivers go through. So if it’s not decided by then, will he need to just give up on the scholarship? Thinking about calling the two schools and explaining the situation and seeing if we can accept both until we know for sure. Anyone have experience with this and can provide some wisdom on it? Thank you!

Congratulations to your son! My DD was a NROTC 4 year scholarship winner and was also awaiting a waiver decision from DoDMERB. In her case, she did not receive the waiver approval until December during her Freshman year.

It was our understanding going in that we would be responsible for the cost of the University until the waiver was approved. I realize this does not fully answer your question, but it does provide one perspective of the waiver process and how it could impact your son's upcoming year.

Best of luck to him! Sounds like he has several wonderful options.

We are in a similar situation with AFROTC Scholarship and awaiting a waiver decision. I talked to DODMERB last week, and was told that because DS has a scholarship offer, the AFROTC waiver authority will automatically review his DQ and consider him for waiver. That it could take 4-6 weeks from the time that they were notified of his case for us to receive a determination of granted vs denied. (this was one week ago). "They will get to him as soon as they get to him". It is hard to wait, considering various schools, etc. May 1 we need a decision on a school.... All the while DS is still waiting to hear from USAFA. Waiting is the worst!

Calling both schools is your best course. See if they will allow you to accept both offers. But, I would wait until the deadline before putting down a deposit. There have been past reports, that schools have agreed to this strategy and deposits have been refunded. It is also possible that you could lose the deposit. But, at least this will extend the final decision into August when housing deposits and/or tuition payments are due. Hopefully ROTC will make a timely determination so all of this becomes moot.
