Hi! Do any of yall know of any MIDN who got an award during a summer cruise? There's a newly minted O-1 (not prior enlisted) with a NAM and I thought that was weird.
Braving a life-threatening storm to rescue stranded scouts, Naval Academy Midshipman 3rd Class Jonathan Dennler was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal.

NAMs can also awarded for pretty much anything out in the fleet as long as it has justifiable impact to the command. Fresh ENS onboard a month may have done something significant.
It's not that weird. NAMs are common. The standard varies pretty widely depending on the command, since the awarding authority can be an O-5 CO.
Newly commissioned O1s can also earn achievement medals for recruiting duty between commissioning and their school date. Achievement medals (NAM, AFAM, AAM) are fairly common, and typically awarded to junior enlisted/NCO and junior grade officers. Once you hit E7/O3, you tend to not get them anymore.
