bad to do phone interviews?

I'm wondering if it's a significant disadvantage to do MOC interviews over the phone? I am applying from college far away from where I live (traveling requires a plane). I would rather not travel three separate weekends to get to these interviews (unfortunately it would have to be three times because of how the dates work out), but I don't want to settle for phone interviews if doing so wouldn't allow me to maximize my chances of receiving a nomination. If it's necessary I can make the three trips, but that would be very time consuming and expensive. Can anybody offer any insight for this? I'm trying to weight the pros and cons and could use some help. Thanks.

You are lucky if interviews are on the weekend. My DS will have to do senators via phone or Skype because they are midweek and he is 1200 miles from home. Our rep who provided a nomination last year (DS made qualified not selected for MMA so reapplying) requires in person so has to come home at Thanksgiving.

My son did his over Skype and FaceTime. He got a nomination last year, so it didn’t seem to hurt his chances!

I also go to college very far away from home and my MOCs said they wouldn’t consider my application any differently just because I’m not there. They’ve seen plenty of college/USMAPS/NAPS etc./international/overseas applicants before so it shouldn’t be an issue. I suggested a Skype call and they said they could accommodate that too. You should call your MOC to ask.

You would have to check with the MOC to see if a phone interview is even an option, most MOC use a panel of interviewers of 3-5 - your best chance at a nomination is with your District Congressman since the pool of applicants will be smaller so I would definitely try to make that interview in person.

My DS senator applications both had a line asking if needed a phone interview and it is only possible for military and college out of state. so yes verify with you MOCs

Your order of preference should be (1) in person, (2) video conference via Skype or FaceTime, (3) telephone.

There’s just no substitute for real-time, in-person conversations. You give them the “full monte” that way, from firm handshake to great poise to eye contact. If you must prioritize your travels, then attend your Representative’s interview in person. Generally, that’s the MOC most likely to give you a nomination because he/she is working off a smaller pool than your Senators.

Totally agree with this!

Last fall, our Senator was conducting interviews, on only one weekend. DD called to say that we were going to be 1000 miles away all weekend at a wedding. They were very accommodating and DD had a phone interview Sunday morning. Spoke for about 20-25 minutes with the Senator and a month or so later, he gave her his nomination. Be yourself, be confident and answer honestly. Worked out fine.
