Does anyone know what the Beat Retreat is on Friday night of Parents Weekend?

The Beat Retreat is a MUST SEE. The USMMA Band does an amazing job at these performances; when you consider that the Plebes have been there for only about a month, it is incredible that they are able to put together this kind of show. It will be hot and crowded at the Beat Retreat, but you should see it at least once during your KP years.

I sure hope our band company plebes if they are part of Sunday's amazing distinguished event either get 1) overnight privileges (somehow I doubt it) or 2) extended visits with parents on Sunday (can only wish) or 3) get to have their cell phones all the next Sunday for their distinguished performance (can only pray for) .....(When the # company won the swim competition they got their phones for all this past Sunday) Does anybody out their in parent Band Company land know how in the past band has received privileges???

dramamama, I am with you in hoping/praying that plebe band co members get rewarded for their sacrifices/(anticipated) fine performances! They certainly deserve it for all the blood, sweat and tears expended!

I wish I could give you an answer about what will happen with Band Co. But there was no performance on Sunday last year. What Band Co. plebes manage to accomplish in their first month and a half is nothing short of amazing! They certainly don't deserve to miss out on Parents Weekend.

I am sure they will work something out for the Plebes in Band Co.

Good, I'm not the only out there wondering. Nice to feel I'm not alone. I get conflicting info from new parent friends with whom I'm emailing. Some of their pc are saying they are performing, some are saying they are spending the night and some don't know. I'm waiting to hear from my d/s-giving him lots of time and space to "feel out" if this is a question he can ask w/out "getting into trouble". I do flexible very well, but I'm having "an internal tug of war contest"/ I don't want a single band co. plebe to miss out time of rest and family but then again this is a huge deal to be part of this amazing Beat Retreat:confused::eek::smile:

Word on the street is that the Band Co kids will not have overnight liberty on Parents' Weekend :frown: But I'm sure they will get something extra special. But just think, you may be able to go to the performance on Sunday and watch your child with pride:biggrin:

If it makes you feel any better, Naval Academy plebes (all of them) did not get overnight for class of 2011.

The liberty policies have changed damatically, not only for band, but for the entire regiment...parent's weekend is just a little extra nice for most of the kids.

I figured their liberty would be limited. We're hoping to be able to see the Sunday performance - it's just a case of figuring out how to get there without driving a car into Manhattan, since we weren't planning to stay in Kings Point all day Sunday. Son's younger brothers will have already missed a day and a half of school to go to Parents Weekend.

If you're planning to stay around Kings Point on Sunday and want to see the performance, you're probably well advised to take the LIRR from Great Neck into Penn Station and then take the subway - if the performance is at the Battery, you take the #1 subway train (7th Avenue line).

KDbax; I'm so looking forward to pulling out all the stops on my memory of the subways and Manhatten. :thumb:I appreciate the information!

Beat Retreat is a MUST SEE! Brings tears to the eyes when you see how the Band Co has been able to come together in such a short time, on top of school, sports, etc.... It is typically very hot in the gym, so be prepared! Wouldn't miss it for the world!

Plebes and Beat Retreat

Will our DS/DD be sitting with us for Beat Retreat? Assuming they wanted to:shake:

I can tell you from my experience (DS is 2011 and not in band) he WAS able to sit with us during Beat Retreat.
It was really nice with the Nassau County Sherriff's bagpipe corp as well. Commander Stewart was so impressed with the band that the whole company enjoyed liberty until 2300 on Sunday and all restrictions were lifted! Not so last year, however liberty was extended some. Maybe those with better memories can correct me.
Be flexible. I am sure with the new "level playing field" idea it seems appropriate that all plebes get that chance for some R&R

Well, our son will be performing  I'm hoping we'll be able to catch up with him a little while after the beat retreat. I still haven't been able to find a performance time/location for the Manhattan performance on Sunday, but right now my thought is to leave the car in Great Neck and take the train down to the Battery.

The following weekend, when the band is going to Lake Champlain, we're going to try to catch their performance.

parent page updated for PW schedule

kdbax~did you see that the PW schedule on the parent page was updated last week and it gives a little more info concerning the band event on Sunday morning?

Thanks for the heads up! I hadn't seen it. The Dutch Royal Family sounds great, although I could live without Corzine and Patterson. We'll definitely leave the car in Great Neck and take the train.

LIRR to penn st. Take subway #1 train to battery park.
Yup. I'm not quite a local, but enough of a NYC traveller that I buy multi-trip MetroCards.

If anyone's interested in joining us, the LIRR trains depart Great Neck at 7:29, 7:49 and 8:20 - it's a 35-minute ride to Penn Station. The #1 subway runs about every 10 minutes on Sunday mornings.

Thanks Dave'smom. Just trying to coordinate with GF and timing, you know...:smile:We will hope for a repeat of 2011, looking forward to a fantastic performance and hoping those Band Plebes get some time with their loved ones.
