I just filled out a sports inquiry for the sport that I am interested in playing if I were to be accepted to West Point. Although I submitted the inquiry, do I have to be cleared on the NCAA Clearing House Site in order to be contacted by the coach? Or can the coach contact me without me being cleared on the clearing house site?

It's been quite a few months since I was doing all this but I believe that you only need to pass clearing house to go on an official visit, they can contact you before you do clearing house.

BTW Clearing house is all online and pretty simple, you can get it done in half an hour.

Final clearance from NCAA does not happen until they receive your final high school transcript. Typically, programs will request a copy of most recent transcripts before offering an official visit.

...but not always. If they like you, the courtship will begin. So much of this depends on the sport, too. I hear revenue generating sports operate quite differently. Swim/dive team was weekly phone calls or post cards, and then a visit, and then more calls/letters/cards until the committement was signed.

Mom3Boys,
You are right of course. Coaches will contact you right away if they are interested, even without confirmation of your academic history.
My comment was directly related to official recruiting visits. Before any NCAA D1 school can invite an athlete on an official visit, initial eligibility has to be confirmed via the clearinghouse. This is established once current transcripts are on file.
