Best Boots for basic??

Probably the most popular ones are the Coyote Brown Nike’s. My DS said they are lightweight and very comfortable. Break in earl, before getting to BCT. He used the issued pair (he still bought them) while in Jack’s since he felt they were a bit more heavy duty.
You have to be careful with the Nikes, for some people they fit amazing for others they dig into the heal. My son tried the Nike boots as they were recommended by his inter-collegiate coach. They were so uncomfortable for him. He had several friends that were in the same boat. He got the Garmont T8 Bifida in coyote brown and absolutely loves them. We bought them in March before he reported for I day. He ran in them three days a week to break them in. It's a year later and they're still his favorite boots.

My son did the same thing. Some Doolies gave him a hard time because he wore the issued boots at Jack's. They weren't laughing when their favorite boots were trashed, and they had to finish BCT in their issued boots.
I will add, he regretted not getting the Oakley boots and bought a pair over break. I just asked him how he likes the Oakleys and he said, "Much better than my Nikes".
My son wore his issued boots during Jack's and saved his Garmont's !! Also, the garments have an incredible warranty. The best advice I have is that you have to go try them on and walk around the store in them for a while. everybody's foot is a little different and each book is meant to address those differences. What works for some won't work for others. My son swears by his Garmont T8 Bifida's ( they also have a T8 tactical, it's more pricey, but I've heard they are really amazing).

Can anyone weigh in on best brand for women? Seems like most of the recommendations...you have to order mens in a smaller size? Thanks for any suggestions.

From my experience, the Nike SFB is very comfortable and easy to put on/take off. They are hit or miss quality-wise. Mine have lasted since basic till today and are still going strong. I wear them nearly every day. Here are the ones 95% of cadets wear here:

Merrell MQC 2.0
Garmont T8 models
Oakley SI
Danner Tachyon
Nike SFB and Nike SFB Field

Update - Mine are the Danner Tachyon 8" boots linked above. It is a pretty popular brand among women, but it's true that women's boots are hard to find, sizing down appropriately usually works. There was just a discussion about it on the women officer's forum on facebook and the general consensus was that we don't have many options made for women yet. I just recommend committing to the order/return cycle and try them on until you find some you like. My Danners fit perfectly with no break in - my tennis shoes are women's size 9 and my boots are size 8.

Our son got the Nikes and broke them in running in the. The ones issues are heavier, so it’s nice to have a pair already broke and in lighter depending what they’re doing. Also, Nike offers a military discount if you submit acceptance papers.

I was one of those people who bought the Nike SFB Field 2s for BCT based off of many people's recommendations. They were ok; they took forever to break in, were pretty stiff even after being broken in, and had some minor issues for people with wider feet. To Nike's credit, they are definitely well made, provided great support, and still look close to original condition. After BCT, I bought some lighter "everyday" boots, a pair of Oakley Light Assault 2s. They are amazing! They are significantly lighter, and way more pliable than my Nikes, while holding up well after almost six months of use.

Majority of people would probably recommend the lightweight Nike boots, but I personally found the Nike boots uncomfortable (Doesn't help that I have wide feet). The Oakley SI Light Assault 2 are amazing. I have put them through a lot of crap, and they are holding strong. Super comfortable and I occasionally use them for running. Did not take long to break in either.
Do they hold up against water well? (The Oakley SI Light Assault 2)

I was out the other day, and I found these seemingly perfect boots in the clearance section of a store. They looked perfect, no safety toes, no zippers, coyote brown, right size, etc., but they weren't waterproof. I had to buy mine online (I went with the Nike's), and they should be arriving on Friday.

I'd say waterproof is up to you. Now as active duty - I use a waterproofing spray on my boots every few months and it works great. The water proof ones all made my feet sweat way too much - miserable in the summer.

What waterproofing spray do your recommend?

Are the Nikes waterproof?
