Best Christmas present ever, but...

My son received his appointment to the AFA. We could not be more proud of him or happy for him.

However, it's conditional based on a medical waiver from DODMERB. I'm really surprised that they would make the appointment first before getting the OK from DODMERB.

Based on our research, we're quite confident all will come together, but it doesn't feel quite right to fully celebrate yet knowing that it could be pulled back.

Anyone else going through this, too?

People go through the same thing each year. It's no different than an LOA which always have conditions.

Did he have an LOA? That’s an early appointment! We are “hoping” for an appointment and waiver but our status just stays “stuck” at “complete but medically disqualified”.

He received his appointment, and has accepted it.

I don't know, technically, what a letter of assurance is, but I'm thinking that what he received is even better than that.

This is what the follow up letter said after he accepted:

"We have received your online acceptance and wish to congratulate you on your decision and welcome you to the USAFA Class of 2024! Your space at USAFA is now officially reserved."

That's pretty unambiguous, but the portal still says 'Medically Disqualified", or something to that effect.

If you son is an athlete then it makes more sense. You will still need to get the medical waiver and dependent on the issue you may need to retest over the years at USAFA. Congratulations!

This doesn’t seem right to me....wouldn’t this be an LOA? Or maybe he is qualified and it hasnt hit the portal yet. Or maybe USAFA appoints before being completely qualified in all areas 🤷‍♀️?

This simply seems like a "conditional appointment" without the Letter of Assurance. Don't overthink it, honestly, and focus on staying eligible through the waiver process.

We should remember that not everything with the appointment process is cut and dry like some hope it would be. There are always outlying cases.

Indeed, that is the issue. We just don't know.

We experienced this last year. DD received an appointment (not an LOA) in early December, medical waiver denied in late December, and then denied again after the rebuttal process in March. The appointment was then rescinded in April. In May, DD received her official appointment certificate in the mail. Good luck to your son!

Yes. My DS received a conditional appointment to CGA, his first choice. (No word on nominations yet for AF and Navy). I want desperately to fully celebrate and brag about my kid to my friends but I don't want to have to caveat the conversation. :(
