Is it possible to bring and keep a (mountain) bike at West Point? If yes, are there ever opportunities on the weekend to go out to trails?

Only thing you're gonna be doing on the weekend is homework. Jk yeah I think you can bring a bike, probably depends on the year you're in

I had a mountain bike stashed in the trunk room and then a spare closet my cow and firstie year. There’s some awesome trails right across the river and not bad over near Stewart. Stuff on post isn’t bad but limited. I also had a friend or two that had road bikes under their bed. It’s definitely doable and I loved having it. There’s a mountain biking lifetime sport I took that I probably should have been kicked out of (they want you to do a new sport to meet your DPE class requirements) but I got along really well with the instructors that they let me stay so I also got biking in my yuk year.

That said, I’d get a feel for your company to see if you could put it in the trunk room as a plebe before you try bringing anything during the academic year. There’s rules in the USCC SOP that used to say it wasn’t allowed (along with boats but that’s for a completely different reason...cadets used to throw drinking parties on boats because it was technically off grounds to get around some of the drinking area restrictions by class year. Ingenuity at its finest). It’s easier as an upperclassmen though, particularly when you have a car to keep it on post, as most TACs don’t mind if it isn’t cluttered somewhere. If you have a good relationship with your sponsor, they might also store it for you as well.

I see. The second half about waiting makes sense, but I'm really glad that there are great trails nearby that people such as yourself have used. Thanks a lot!

The Catskills are fantastic. Having a car or friends with upperclassmen that have cars let’s you go explore said mountains. Things to look forward to after plebe year

You could definitely have a bike here, even as a plebe if you're in the right company and use it when appropriate (though I'd have to check the SOP again).

My only note to you is: for the foreseeable future, your options off-post are basically none as a 3rd to 1st class cadet due to COVID and our present Comm, unless things change. We are basically locked down on-post here, so enjoy riding and running in the residential areas or along the train tracks.

There are some mountain bike trails behind the Jewish Chapel with some fun rock gardens if you get a chance to go up that way
