Question - I am in the process of completing my application. It asks for a "biographical sketch" which from what I read is a biography written in the third person. Is this the correct format?

my son is wondering g the same thing
The original thread you responded to is from 2009. I think I can help however. I did not write mine in the third person, and just covered all the things stated in the instructions that needed to be said, and I remember I explicitly stated I understood the service obligation. If you would like, I can pm my final draft. Just lmk.

The service obligation understanding is the most important part here. When my DS applied, he just wrote that he understood there is a service obligation. Admissions called him and asked that he write a supplement to outline exactly what his understanding of the service obligation is in detail.

I copy pasted direct from the USMMA website under the service obligation section and went through each obligation one by one acknowledging them, and it worked. I think it's probably the safest bet to say more and not less for sure 🙂

I wrote mine just like any other college essay. I'd recommend starting by making a list of all the reasons you'd like to go to USMMA. "I want to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point because..." From here you go into detail about each of your reasons and state somewhere that you understand what the service commitment is and state the service commitment(s). I made mine similar to this and received my appointment a few weeks after submitting. Best of luck!
