23-year-old becomes first blind graduate of Naval Academy

A Texas man who lost his sight while studying at the Naval Academy persevered and completed his degree, becoming the first blind graduate of the academy.

Indeed! There’s the letter of the law and there’s the spirit of the law. Glad that USNA — recognizing how far he’d come — chose the latter. The powers that be did the right thing. He will do great things.

The Supe is usually amenable to allowing med DQ mids to continue and graduate when the issue comes up during their 1/C year. USNA had already invested the bulk of what they spend per graduate on this young man by the time he became uncommissionable, so it’s an easier calculation. When it happens earlier they usually are not as—well “fortunate” isn’t the right word given what happened—but certainly the silver lining is he got to finish up and will bring the lessons of the Naval Academy to the civilian world. Happy for him.
