Boot Info

I would recommend buying boots ahead of time...and do yourself a favor and wear them everywhere for a few weeks before leaving. We did this for my daughter's first AT last summer and I'm so glad we did. To many cadets with blisters a few days in and it ruins the rest of the training for them.

Researched some boots from the Rocky and Belleville Tactical Research Line. Here are just a few listed in a graphic organizer. Hope this is helpful for those not sure on which boots meet regulation.

Oh my...

I don't think I've ever seen anyone do a "graphic organizer" like this for boots before. It almost looks like a decision matrix from USAFA's Engr 101 class.

I am guessing you plan to declare a "techy" major?:D

No. I'm actually going for a Legal Studies major.

From what I've read about the boots, they are not waterproof, which is something USAFA specifically asks for. I think I am going to avoid buying them and instead going for the Bellville or Danner ones instead, which I know to be waterproof.

I purchased the S2V Rockies. They are a bit heavier weighing about 3.5 pounds in contrast to the other 1.5 pounds, but they meet regulation and also have incredible grip.

My son didn't bring boots to R day, I had them sent right after A day. This worked for us. He really likes the Nike boots.

My son is a big Nike fan! He has a fairly narrow foot and they seem to fit him best. He is a cross country running and has been using Nike's exclusively for 5+years. When he saw that USAFA had them on their recommended list he was like "Yes! I'm getting those." The problem is that upon research, it appears that the Nike boots are NOT waterproof as required by USAFA. Also it appears there are several complaints that the sole of the boot is not very durable, with many saying the sole cracked or split. As such we are not sure it is the best choice for BCT. We are going with the Danner Rivots for BCT as they are waterproof and more durable. We are looking at getting the Nike boots for our son to use after BCT, i.e. during the academic year, as they are also lighter weight.

Is anyone familiar with the Bellville 693? Seem to meet the specifications...GORE-TEX, sage green, 8". If info on-line is correct they are a bit lighter weight than the Rocky Sv2 and Danner Rivot. Does anyone know if these will hold up at BCT?

Are these S2Vs waterproof or only water resistant?
From my research there are some Rocky S2V's that have Gore-tex & are waterproof. They appear to look slightly different than those pictured above.

I believe the 693 boot was the style we bought for DD last year since the recommended ones had been discontinued. As far as I know, since she didn't say otherwise, they held up well...although I can't say the same for her feet. :frown:

I haven't heard much of Danner. They seem the best looking to me, personally, and I would assume the price reflects quality–especially since they are named in the instructions booklet. Has anyone any experience with Danner boots, namely in comparison to Rocky and/or Belleville?

On another note, does anyone know what boots are issued?

My DS tried on the Danner Rivots earlier this week & really liked them. The store didn't have the Sage Green in stock so they ordered them for him. They do seem a little bit heavier than some of the others, but my son said they felt very sturdy. Our local Danner store even offered the 10% discount for military personnel because he was going to a SA, which was so awesome of them. We are going to get him the Nike boots(which are very light weight) after BCT for him to use for day to day stuff, like walking to classes.

Where is a good place to try on boots? I can't seem to find any of the recommended boots at my local stores.

I got my boots at the base exchange. I'm not sure they have retail stores carrying these boots. You may want to get another opinion on this. I live in CA and I don't think the local stores carry these boots.

I don't know what individual retailers supply, but the Danner website has a store locator that could help (they probably carry competitor brands as well). Some stores like Bass Pro Shops will only carry civilian boots, so it would be beneficial to call the stores in your radius before visiting

In general, Danner makes good boots. I think the issued boots are from different manufacturers based on what I recall from Web Guy pictures.
