I don't know if this is the appropriate place to ask this, but I don't know who else to ask, so here goes. DS is going to Boys State this summer, and for the life of me, I cannot find anywhere how much it costs. It was not on the application, and nowhere on the website does it say anything about how much it is. I know it may vary from state to state, but does anyone know the ballpark cost to attend Boys State?

When I went to California girls state, both mine and my boys state counterpart were fully funded by the American Legion. If I’m not mistake they are all funded by the American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary, but if I’m wrong thats still probably your best bet to find info

It was free in NY for my son.

Schools or other donors pay the small fee.

Our legion post sponsored the cost. We did pay $100 for a round trip bus ticket that the local Legions got organized and set up. One way drive would have been 6.5 hours for us.

I would have your son reach out directly to the legion that sponsored him to be sure. Our state has 'fines' for silly things, so DS took some loose change with him.

Find your local American Legion post and ask. Each state is different. Ours was $300, but like people have said above, the local posts have several scholarships. they're just waiting for students to ask for one.

I am a Executive Trustee and Senior Staffer at our Boys State and also the County Coordinator where I live. Thus far we are sending over 60 boys from our county and those are all fully funded by posts. In some cases, individual posts have "angels" like the local Volunteer Fire Dept that will fund some of the slots but mostly, it is fully post funded. The cost to the posts for these slots is $300 each and we are the lowest cost Boys State program that I'm aware of and many are over $500. Our low cost is to a great contract with our host campus along with help from an in-house foundation that fund raises from corporations and organizations.
.
Now if the boys (or their parents) want to get three college credits, they need to pay an admin fee to our host campus and the American Legion does not cover that.
.
There are some underserved high schools and for that reason, we also allow self nomination with the parents paying (I think) $350. If your son has been signed up and nobody asked for money, I'd expect that he is covered. He'll seill need spending money for shirts/memorabilia, cold drinks
and the like.

Our program has lots of notable alumni including both current US Senators, former Governor Chris Christie, Supreme Court Justice Alito, James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano), John Bongovi, OldRetSWO and SonOfOldRetSWO.

DD last June went to Va Girls State. All expenses were paid except travel. This was due to covid they said. Normally, they charter buses to Longmont University.

DS received an email from the district chairman informing him that he has secured funding for him to attend Boys State. It fell in line with what all of you said. Thank you to everyone who replied and offered insight. He is so excited to go. At first it was just for how it would look on his resume; now he is seeing what an exciting and fulfilling week it is going to be. Did not get to formally thank @USSEnterpr1se, @Heatherg21, @davy1dave, @OldRetSWO, and @Alchemist. Really appreciate it. 🙏

Great Job. Tell him to enjoy it to the fullest. My Boys state was cancelled due to COVID, and that is the one thing I wish I could have gone to.
