I want to help some people out that might be curious about life as a freshman the same way I got help last year. For some background, I am a freshman in AFROTC on scholarship that is currently reapplying to USAFA. I got a USMA appointment, but chose the AFROTC scholarship. I am majoring in Aerospace Engineering. If you have any questions or want advice, feel free to ask.

What school did you choose, and what type of scholarship did you get? I just received a type 7 and I am looking at my options.

Type 2 and prefer not to say school just to stay anonymous, but it is a large detachment (over 100 people) when compared to most AFROTC units. Large detachments have different quirks from their smaller detachment counterparts. I would keep that in mind.

Thanks for the offer of answering questions. My son received a scholarship also and will be going somewhere Fall 2022 whether USAFA or college with AFROTC. I have asked others on the forums also: did your college/university talk about the % or # of cadets that make it to field training and then continue on to commissioning? We are thinking we will need to make some choices when everything is laid out in front of us. Just very nervous about the possibility that he could put in two years and then have to redirect his path if he doesn’t get selected. Any insight you have would be appreciated!

I understand the worry because I have that same worry. COVID-19 has affected the amount of people who go to field training. I believe the POC (Juniors specifically) it was 50% of FTP (Sophomores) got slots for FT. Usually, I believe it is 70-80% (don't quote me on that). It changes from year to year, so it is hard to predict. Your son can only do his best to perform. As long as your son keeps working hard like he did for that scholarship he should be fine.

Thank you so much. Not knowing is definitely hard but like you said all he can do is keep working hard once he gets there (not sure where “there” is yet!) and hopefully that will translate into a positive outcome.
Good luck to you and it’s great you are here on the forums giving back-you’re a good egg!! 😀
