Calls?

Hello everyone!

I know this is a somewhat strange question, but it's been on my mind for a little while now.

When people say they've received a call about an appointment from Congressmen X or Senator Y, how did the call come? Did they call your school and get you called out of class to tell you? Did you just receive a call on your cell phone during school hours? Or is it in the evening after you return home?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

I have been wondering the same thing. Son put my cell # down on all his applications. (Teenage boy with history of playing soccer with phone in pocket. Already crushed a few phones. So he listed my number just to be safe.) Every time my phone rings during the day with an unknown number I jump. Looking forward to when I can go back to screening and not answering calls from unknown numbers.

My call for USAFA and USNA came on a Friday. MOC said he was notified on Thursday about my appointment to USAFA. It was a phone call around noon.
My other call for USMA came on a Wednesday but I was not reachable. So he called my Mom. Same time frame.

They call when they have time. I knew for USAFA and USNA if a call came it would be on a Friday or Saturday. This kept my phone stalking to a minimum.

For my DS, USAFA notified MOC office via email. The MOC office called my DS school counselor and he in turn pulled my DS out of class. Counselor then called MOC office back, MOC then put call on hold to call me (father) for a three way call to congratulate DS on the full appointment. It was nicely done by the MOC office. Wish you the best.

how did you know the call from USNA would come on a Friday or Saturday? Seems like there are appointments mostly on Tuesdays and Thursdays listed on the appointment thread...

When offers of appointments are decided on, the academy sits on the information for a few days while the nomination source is notified and given a chance to contact the candidate. They usually make the decisions during the middle of the week and the MOCs have till the end of the week to make the call. The portal is updated a few days later and the BFE is sent priority mail. DD received a service connected spot through ROTC so there was no call from the Secretary of the Army, just a portal update on Monday morning.

It is funny. My Beloved #3 has an SD/Vet nomination. As a Gold Star Kid, there is no one who is going to call...and it will be ok. What matters is the portal update...

I looked at the thread from last year on what days people got calls not portal updates. I found the pattern. It is definitely not a solid rule just an observation. Plus it made me feel better.

Last year, the MOC's office coordinated with DH and me for the best time to reach DD. So, shortly after DD came home from her college class on a Friday, the MOC personally called to give her the news, congratulate her, and chatted with her for several minutes.

It was absolutely priceless to watch DD's reaction the entire time.

My DS received a call from representative of MOC's office around 3:00 p.m. on a Monday. She left a message on family answering machine that she wanted to notify him of his "status" at the USNA. Of course we get home after 5. I called the office back, hoping to get someone. (DS was at swim practice) . Called and provided his cell number and advised he was at swim practice. DS called and left a similar message and said he'd call again in the a.m. He came down the stairs at 6:00 a.m. and said "This is going to be the longest 2 hours of my life!" But, I'd checked his portal and it had changed overnight. I said, "No it's not!" Showed him and that was one of the happiest moments of our lives.

When I got the call for my DD's appointment from Senator Isakson's office last year, I remember the caller ID said "United States Senate". Senator Perdue's office also notified my
DD about her appointment by email. There was no BFE from USAFA but her ALO presented her with the appointment letter at our high school awards ceremony assembly later in the year.

When my DS received his appointment a year ago, I got a call from one of the MOC's on my way to work. Since there is a 'no talking on cell phone while driving law' where I live, I normally don't talk on the phone while driving (trying to be a good example to the teenage drivers in my house). On that particular morning I sensed that I should answer the call, especially when the caller ID said 'PRIVATE NUMBER'. My hunch to answer was correct as the person on the other said "Good Morning. This is Senator XYZ. Is this..." That is one call I will never forget!

All told, my DS got calls from all three MOC's that nominated him.

P.S. If the caller ID says PRIVATE NUMBER, ANSWER THE CALL!

Thank you everyone for your replies! I know my congresswoman calls her nominees who have been appointed. I'm not saying that I believe I am getting an appointment, and I am not trying to put the cart before the horse, but I sincerely hope to receive a call eventually.

Good luck. I do hope you get that phone call. I'm pulling for you.

Senator Blumenthal (CT) called my DD on his cell but got no answer because he was at wrestling practice. He then called our home and spoke with me. He had left a message for DD on his cell so he called back and they spoke. He had called him previously to let him know of his nomination but didn't get him then either - football practice!

My DD did not receive a call from her nominating Congressman and was just notified of her appointment via her portal on 2/25. I know this seems to be the common notification process but I hear that not all personally notify the nominees. Hang in there and good luck. Stay hopeful.

My DD was so anxious to receive this call. She always had her phone with her and ready for that special moment. However, it didn't happen. No call:( . Portal was updated with the nomination followed by a letter from the Senator and Congresswoman. End result... Appointee to the Class of 2021:groupwave:

Congrats to her. Yes, my DD was a bit deflated for the first few seconds that she did not receive the call, then was so thrilled with the appointment that it really did not matter to her.
