DS was notified he has been accepted into the NROTC campus program at the school he plans to attend. He did not receive the national and has started the re-application process. He has been assigned a sponsor, and will work with that individual for both the national and campus cholarships.

In the current environment can anyone share perspective on the availability of campus scholarships, and is there a possibility due to budgetary constraints he could conceivably require Advanced Standing at the end of junior year due to lack of scholarships (assuming grades/PT/other factors are all on track)?

Thank you.

I am new to all of this. My DS did receive a 4 year NROTC scholarship. We just met with the college ROTC CO and XO. From our conversation, it sounds like "MOST" ROTC universities give the ROTC unit money to distribute as scholarships to their Midshipmen. So, that being said, I would check with the University ROTC program office and ask. At my son's college, the ROTC office looks at what assistance students are getting, and then distributes to the midshipmen. But- again I am very new to this whole process.

Congratulations to your DS! Thank you for the shared insight. The campus program application was quite extensive and was characterized as competitive, and he is excited to start the journey.

NROTC doe not have any campus based scholarships. All scholarships are a national competition. As a college freshman, Navy Option, your DS can re-apply for the 4 year national scholarship. If he is awarded this, it essentially becomes a 3 year scholarship, because it will not kick in until next year. If he is not awarded this, he can apply for the 3 year scholarship in the spring. Again, this is a national competition. If he does not get the 3 year scholarship, he can apply in the spring of his sophomore year for the 2 year scholarship and Advanced Standing, also national competitions. As to the possibility of earning a 3 or 2 year scholarship vs gaining Advanced Standing, no one can say for certain. The best advice for him is to control what he can, starting now. Arrive on campus in top physical shape, prepared to work hard both academically and in the NROTC unit; be involved and make a good impression. The scholarships go to the top performers; be one of them.

There are opportunities to apply for sideload scholarships which is a national competition (NROTC doesn't do campus based scholarships in the sense that AROTC does). Advanced standing is applied for, and awarded, PRIOR to Junior year. Some folks are not awarded advanced standing each year for myriad reasons. I doubt budgetary reasons is a big deal since they would only receive the stipend, but you never know. There are never any guarantees. Ever.

Edit: cross posted with ProudDad.

sounds advice, and exactly what I have told him. Thank you.

To put it briefly: out of the ~20 people I have seen apply for 3 year NROTC options, 100% of the people who I believed *deserved* a scholarship got one. You'd be shocked at how many they give out to THE RIGHT MOTIVATED PEOPLE. I have only seen 3 not get the 3 year, and it was because they sorely lacked the characteristics needed to be a good officer.

Thank you FF44. DS has been extremely proactive with asking for information and attacked his Midshipman Candidate packet of forms in a very organized manner, and has been working out every day while tracking his progress towards his initial target scores. Sounds like carrying this behavior and attitude into the semester and performing academically will put him in prime position. Really appreciate the insights.
