Taking my son to tour the academy this summer. Can anyone recommend the best time to visit from their own experiences?

All summer is a bustling time. There will be evolutions of Plebe summer activities going on all over the Yard, and all the other STEM camps, athletic camps, and seminars will be taking place. I don't think there is any bad time, but understand that during the beginning of Plebe summer (end of June/beginning of July), there will be a lot of the new classes parents touring and staying in the area, and the end of August during Plebe parents weekend, it will be very busy.

If i had to throw out a time? Maybe the end of July?? Things will have settled into a rhythm for the Plebe's, and the regular routine will be going on. Regardless, Annapolis can be hot and muggy in the summer, so be prepared as well as you can for that.

After Plebe Summer (1981) and Second Class summer , I swore I would never go back to the Annapolis/DC area in July ! I've only broken that rule for BGO training (>20 years ago) and a Classmates graduation in Norfolk. Gonna break it again this summer for grandaughter's first birthday !

Kinda hard to not do it when you live in the same area and your parents actually live in Annapolis. ;)

(And, Norfolk ain't much better that time of year!).

If the purpose of the visit is to see USNA, take the tour, meet with Admissions staff, you can do that at any time.

During the summer, you'll see plebes marching around. However, watching them is a VERY different thing than being among them. It's like watching a parade vs. marching in one. My point is that observing PS from afar won't give you much insight into it.

Ac year, USNA is bustling. If you can attend on a football WE, you can enjoy that pageantry. However, hotels are crowded and more $$, Annapolis is crowded, etc. Other times, you'll see much of the same, with fewer crowds.

In the end, it really doesn't matter much -- other than June, when there are almost no mids around. Mostly NASS, sports camps, etc.

We went during the third week of July and it was great. There was lots of Plebe Summer activity going on and the Noon Meal Formation was terrific. If your son is a potential candidate don't miss it.

This is great advice thank you! 😊
