Considering family trip to Caribbean or Cancun or Costa Rica. Are freshman allowed to go overseas or it is inappropriate and will negate their chance later for rated positions such as cro or pilot? Or is it better to stay in US whole first year to be safe?
Spring break is still far off but we would have to renew all our passports or get new ones for kids including c4c so need to know this sooner than later.
Thanks.

We cruised several times with our kids while our son was at USAFA and after. We went to all those places you've listed and it's never been a problem for him and he is in a rated AFSC.

Our cadet visited us in Saudi as a C4C last Christmas and will do so again this year. However, there is a process to get approval to go overseas, and it can be lengthy. Your cadet should get started on it now, and start with the AOC.

The process can be cumbersome, and there are a few restrictions, especially lately. Cadets wishing to leave the US should have already started the paperwork

It never hurts to mention to the chain of command that you plan to travel abroad, because there are countries (or parts of countries) we are banned from visiting due to the security risk it would pose (i.e. there is no travel to France currently, parts of border/central Mexico, several African and South American countries), but the actual process for getting your trip approved will come out 4-6 weeks ahead of time from your AOC/AMT in coordination with AFOSI. They will have the actual paperwork you need to get done, and then depending on where you are going, your first O-5/6 in the chain will sign off for you to go. If you aren't going to any banned places, and have a plan, it always gets approved.

Yes. If you are going to somewhere like Saudi Arabia, it will be annoying, but you can do it.

As of last month, OK, but it is an ever changing world. Let your Squad Com know and get paperwork in asap. Be back a day (at least) early. AWOL as a c4c is a bad thing. I would get trip insurance as well in case security conditions change.

We deliberated and decided on Puerto Rico, it is US territory so does not need passports renewal (as all our passports have expired). Since its not continental US, probably needs permissions from Academy too but hopefully is easier to get.
