Can ROTC Cadets Study Abroad for a Whole Year?

Hi,

I'm an uncontracted Freshman and I've decided that I would like to Study Abroad for a full year rather than a semester to acclimate myself with a particular culture. As I've heard, there are some hoops cadets have to jump through to study abroad for a semester, so I can just imagine what pursuing a full year entails. Nevertheless, I'm optimistic about this goal of mine and would like to know what would be the best process with the Army to pursue a full year of time away while still maintaining enrollment in the ROTC program? I really don't want to harm myself on the OML if I choose to do this, but I'd like to broaden my cultural horizon and would appreciate the experience of living in other countries while I'm still in university.

Thanks for posting these, but I already saw these and I think they only deal with a semester abroad rather than a year abroad. If theres any info on a year, I would really appreciate that the most.

Why would you think the process was different for a year? Do you really think they would have an entirely different process based on the length of time? Personally, I think a year is unachieveable unless you are an LREC cadet and this applies to your language specialty. Nevertheless it doesn't hurt to pursue it and settle for a semester if need be. Just my two cents.... it's how I would run things.

I think the real key is to work with your ROO and PMS on this.

Many times when you study a year abroad, some units taken overseas might not transfer back to your home institution which could delay your graduation. This affects your commissioning schedule and your Form 104-R. I'm not saying it is impossible to do a year abroad. It just takes extremely good planning and communication between you and your cadre.

If you confer with your ROO, you will get the best info possible for your major and your college.

Thats a fair point. I also got pm'd proposing that I could study abroad over the summer and fall semester for roughly about 7 months. That also seems like a fair deal. However, I'll take your advice and inquire about this to my ROO and PMS.

I had a friend into AFROTC who did a year-long study abroad. He ended up having to stay in the rotc program for an extra semester because the program apparently required 1.5 years as a POC (he did study abroad junior year). Talk to your cadre, I’m sure they’ll be willing to work with you and have all the details!
