hi I was just denied last week but I am looking forward to improving for next years application. I’ll be running track cross country at D1 level next year as a college freshman and I was wondering if anyone knows if the academy can recruit college athletes? Thank you

USNA can bring in a small number of those with colorblindness. The number is roughly 20, but could be fewer. Bottom line is that USNA is an option but you should definitely pursue other options.

Also make sure you understand that your options on commissioning are limited. You will not be able to drive ships or subs or fly. Your choices are USMC ground and certain restricted line/staff corps positions (e.g., Supply Corp, Intel, CEC, etc.). Maybe cyber -- not sure. These are all important supporting roles, but the "core" of the USN will be off-limits and USMC limited to non-aviation roles.

You would have more options upon commissioning at USMA and USAFA -- but if USNA is your dream, go for it!

There are rules that pertain to athletes looking to transfer. NCAA usually requires your current school to give permission to speak to another school (of remember the rules correctly). The NCAA compliance officer at your school will know how to handle this. NCAA website is your best bet for info.

My DD went through this two years ago. Generally, the academy coaches will not be able to "recruit" you while you are participating in sports at another University. The good news is that you do not have to be a recruited athlete to gain admission. You will go through the process like every other applicant.

If you receive an appointment, your current college will have to release you. This applies even if you do not have an athletic scholarship. Their is a NCAA by-law that allows you to transfer to a Service Academy and not sit out a year. I do not have it handy, but you should be able to find it with Google. You do not get an extra year of eligibility.

USAFA did this for someone we know. She didn't get in the first time, they continued to recruit her after she applied again. No extra year of eligibility though because she had played in her first school.
