Candidate Visit: USNA

What would be the most appropriate attire to wear on the candidate visit?
Not your letter jacket or I’ve-been-there Boys State/Girls State/Governor’s Honors Program/Quiz Bowl champion/Space Camp shirt.

For men and women, comfortable shoes. Uneven bricks abound in the Yard.
What I would class as “church clothes” - polo shirt or other collared shirt/nice top, khaki slacks or other casual pants/tailored skirt, appropriate outerwear for weather. Everything clean, pressed, fitting well, in good repair. Outerwear appropriate for the weather. No heavy make-up, jangly jewelry, heavy perfume or body spray. You should present professionally. Well-groomed hair and nails. This is not a social occasion.

DS scheduled for a visit. Any suggested activities for parents during the visit time? Thanks.

2020 and 2025 mom and a local who loves Annapolis! There is so much to do in and around Annapolis that you will need quite a few trips in the next 4 years to cover everything. The midshipmen are in a hard rom and I have not been able to see my sponsor midshipmen for a few weeks now so not sure, if visitors will be allowed to explore the yard. If you are allowed on the yard, you can easily spend many hours walking the grounds, visiting the museum the chapel and the crypt of John Paul Jones, the midshipmen store and the cemetery. There is a lot to explore in the town as well there are quite a few museums a lot of fun places to eat and Annapolis is just a beautiful town to visit. Washington D.C. and Baltimore are easy day trips. Our favorite places to eat within walking distance of the Academy Ms. Shirley's, Iron Rooster Federal House, Red Red Wine, Reynold's Tavern and Levels. Severn Inn across the Naval Academy bridge is also a good place to eat and it is a short enjoyable walk. Allergic to sea food so can not make any suggestions about sea food but there are lots of good places to try Boathouse and Cantler's. Enjoy your visit if you decide to come.

The invitation states parents will not be permitted on the yard. We will plan to explore the area. I appreciate the food suggestions. Thank you!

I second Iron Rooster, Cantler’s and Boatyard. We’ve visited a few times and enjoyed all of those. Touring the yard and eating lunch there and shopping for merch are what we’ve done in the past but it sounds like you’ll have to do those another time, at least you’ll have something to look forward to!

If you want to get away from DTA for a couple hours, I recommend Yellowfin in Eastport for mid-scale dining. For real fun, Captain Billy’s crabs at Popes Creek downstream on the Potomac- my extended family had gone there for 40 years.

I love the Severn Inn. I love sitting on the deck and viewing the Yard across the river. Crab cakes are stellar.

My DS will be April 9th. Picked April hoping Yard was going to be open. 3 prior trips canceled.

DS is coming in this Friday March 26th for the visit. As I read the email details concerning the visit, it looks as though ONLY the candidates will be allowed on tour and visit activities, no parents. Is this how everyone else that has received the email invite understands?

Also, we will be flying into BLT Wednesday evening landing 7:30 pm. What are the best transportation options getting to downtown Annapolis from the airport? Is Uber or Lyft reliable from airport and is one of those more active than the other?
Thanks for the insight everyone!

our plebe has used Uber from BWI and had no issues.

Many MIDS use Uber. When I travel, I use Uber Black. More expensive, but they are professional drivers, use COVID precautions, typically drive Suburbans, clean and professional. Not at bad spend during this pandemic. One could crack both windows to have cross ventilation with dramatically reduces risk. Ive had some poor regular Uber drivers and unclean vehicles.

If your stay is only a day or two, it could actually be cheaper (and more convenient) to rent a little car from BWI. Or closely priced. It’s about 50-60$ each way to Uber. Depending on time of day and tip. We always use Next Car. Never had a problem. And never a line to process in or out, like the bigger brand Hertz, etc.
