Candidate Visit Weekend 2018

I booked my flights and airport transfers. I am very excited to attend. My dad and grandfather have worked hard at helping me attend.

Just out of curiosity- how does USNA know who to extend CVWs invites to without info on the application used to compute WCS? Without info for the WCS, what makes them extend a CVW?

My DS went to NASS, however, he only got his CWV invitation from USNA after he received his LOA.

That being said I remember candidates that were not accepted to attend NASS receiving CWV invitations and I had read several post of Juniors also receiving CWV invitations early in their Junior years.

A variety of inputs can trigger a CVW. A BGO request is often what pushes it. It can also be Admissions seeing a candidate who did a Preliminary application (NASS Application) and can see some of the biggest pieces of WCS in place.

A CVW can be decidedly fun, so have some fun.
Maybe take something to read, while the Plebe who is dragging you is studying.

The biggest thing is to remember this is your visit. Especially those going in Sept the Plebes you drag with are brand new at this and still feeling things out. Don’t be afraid to ask to talk with some upperclassman in ECAs, sports, majors you are interested in. The Plebes are great and can give great insight into Plebe Summer and transition to ac year, but they are so new to this they are still trying to figure it out too. Ask lots of questions. I see so many candidates focus so much on Plebe Summer and so little on the remaining time at USNA. In the end Plebe Summer is 6 weeks, the rest of it is 4 years. So explore the entire process and ask questions of all Mids, their views and opinions change as they mature, see more of the fleet, are exposed to different leadership. Talk to the Senior Leaders, Company Officers and Profs you encounter too. They have great insight.

Couldn’t agree more with NavyHoops. Talk to a lot of people and get a lot of perspectives, because if you’re not careful, you can get sucked into one person’s — or just a few people’s — opinion. Plebes, in particular, are notorious for being fickle and moody, based on what they did most recently. Catch them after a successful alpha inspection, they love the place. Catch them after back-to-back-to-back calculus-chemistry-cyber, they hate the place.

Rather than fixating in individual anecdotes, seek themes across a broad cross-section of people. That’s the best way to get a feel for a place.

Juniors and Seniors, you will absolutely enjoy CVW. It is the closest thing to experiencing life as a MIDN. Current Plebes will treat you like a brother and sister during your visit and make you feel at home. More importantly, they will be very honest with their experience and opinion on the Academy. CVW decisively helped my DS decide to accept the Appointment. Like others said, several things can trigger CVW. Although DS was offered CVW in his Junior Year in place of NASS, he took CVW in his Senior Year. In my DS case, LOA in September triggered CVW invite again. He came back and loved the Academy and culture, MIDNs, Academic and Athletic Programs, facilities, and clearly the Academy location - you can’t beat that. He’s now a CVW Host at the Naval Academy. He’s volunteered to host a candidate on Sep 20-22, who ever that maybe. Candidates can request your host of preference if you have a criteria. That’s what my DS did and he stayed with 2 interesting MIDNs. He is now returning favor to another aspiring MIDN. Enjoy your CVW!

My DS received a CVW in his Junior year and he hadn't submitted anything to the Academy other than peruse the website after hearing a Mid speak about the Academy at his high school. We weren't even sure what a CVW was...lol. After speaking with a few people DS accepted and had a great experience. It definitely increased his interest in attending. He then went to NASS this summer, another good experience, and has since submitted his app for the Class of 2023. Would recommend the CVW for anyone considering attending the USNA.
