Hi everyone,
I applied to Summer Seminar maybe a week ago and today they offered me an invitation to Candidate Visit Weekend. Does this mean anything regarding my Summer Seminar application?

I'm only a candidate, so take what I say with a grain of salt. As I understand, most applicants to USNA will be offered a chance to attend a CVW. These are not necessarily competitive, however, Summer Seminar is. So, no, being offered a spot to a CVW does not say anything, positive or negative, about your NASS application.

Keep in mind that any decision made on your NASS application says little about your competitiveness as a candidate. Good luck!

No, most applicants to USNA are NOT offered a CVW. DS is a plebe this year and many of his friends did not get offered a CVW

CVW is offered by invitation only throughout the academic year.

No the 2 are unrelated. IMO a CVW is a big positive as they are invite only and show there is USNA interest. Not every applicant gets one. I highly recommend attending if it is feasible travel wise and financially. Better opportunity to 'see behind the curtain' into reality of life as a Plebe. Great info here: https://www.usna.edu/CVW/index.php

Exactly. And NASS is competitive only insofar there is a rough outline of suitable grades, scores, activities, sports, etc. for a baseline assessment of candidate viability, which Admissions can overlook any time they want if they see a candidate application with other elements they might be looking for and who they think would benefit from an a carefully structured, up-close look at USNA. NASS is a recruiting and outreach tool. There will be many with stellar “stats” who are not accepted. And that’s okay. It’s not a pre-requisite to a slam-dunk application.

Any NASS applicant who is not accepted should not immediately think they are not competitive. Go and look at the class profiles, look at what usna.edu tells you about what classes to take, and press on.

Thanks for the insight, Im already planning on attending CVW this March, cannot wait!

This is incorrect. Only a small percentage of applicants/offered receives a CVW appointment.

These are not necessarily competitive, however, Summer Seminar is.
Let’s clarify here: Spots in NASS are indeed highly sought and difficult to get, so in that sense we can say it’s “competitive.” But it’s not a simple “rack and stack” process in which high score wins. NASS is an outreach and recruiting tool. To be sure, those who are invited are considered potential appointees. But NASS puts much emphasis on reaching candidates in under-represented segments, which could be geographic, socio-economic and so forth.

I just received an invite to a CVW as well! I was very surprised, as it seems rather early on (I am c/o 2028). I quickly accepted, however. I'm quite excited.
Same, I’m also a hopeful ‘28! Really pumped for this opportunity. If you’re going to the first session, maybe I’ll see you around.

My son received his invitation to CVW last spring before receiving his acceptance to NASS. I believe the NASS decision came before he actually attended CVW but he received the invitation first. And then after attending a spring CVW, NASS and a XCTF camp, he received another invitation to a fall CVW. Still waiting on the news from admissions but we just keep hoping that the fact that he's been invited to things means he has something they are looking for. Whether it is enough is still to be determined but we're hoping!

Good luck to you! CVW was an excellent experience for my son and so was NASS. If possible, you should definitely accept the invitation.

Thank you! I am attending CVW in March and hopefully Summer Seminar this summer. Hopefully your son gets his appointment soon!

Spring CVWs are mostly juniors. There will be some seniors who have appointments and have asked to do a visit to help make a decision. Remember a CVW is a shadow experience of what day to day USNA life is. NASS is a great program but it is what it is. It has its pros and is meant to a program that exposes candidates to USNA and SA life. But it’s totally different than a CVW. It can help solidify a SA is the right place for someone. You can knock out your CFA. Take it each program for what they are.

Should a CVW invite to a class of 2027 applicant be taken as a good sign then?

Like everyone else has said, attend the CVW, if you are able to. I was invited to 2 CVW's last year, and I only loved 1 of those. I attended my first one back in March of 2022, and it was terrible. The plebe is was with was super quiet, was boring to talk to, and made it seem like the Naval Academy was not a fun place. HOWEVER, my second CVW, October 2022, was absolutely amazing! I met the most amazing people on that CVW, took a selfie with about 30 other CVW attendees in our introduction meeting, and had the best conversations with the plebes I was with until midnight on both nights. If you choose to attend, don't let the plebes you get put with determine whether you like it or not. Pay attention to the classes, the professors, and how the Midshipmen operate on a daily basis.

March is the dark ages at the Naval Academy. Plebes can often be tired and over the entire Plebe life. It’s not uncommon to see that in a second semester CVW. It’s actually good to see that. Candidates can often have a glorified view of USNA. It’s a wonderful place, but it’s not an easy place. You can’t understand what a grind that place is, especially as a Plebe. Especially one who is tired of squaring corners and plebing a cover in March of Plebe year. It doesn’t excuse their behavior for sucking. But, the dark ages are not easy at USNA. In October, most have been Plebes in the academic year for 2 months. It’s still shiny, new, enthusiastic. They just completed their first 6 week exams and figuring out the whole Plebe thing. Talk to more than Plebes. Talk to upper class in various majors and ECAs. A firstie in March is a pretty happy human. They have a different view of USNA as they prepare to graduate. They understand the system, are excited for the next steps and have done a lot more training. Post spring break USNA when it starts to warm up and the flowers bloom… that is a pretty great USNA. Everyone gets a little happier as they can feel the ac year ending and look forward to the summer. Plus it’s just a dang beautiful campus during April and May.

I'll be at the first session in March too! Extremely excited, see you then!

Thank you for clarifying. It now makes a lot more sense as to why the plebes acted different based on the time of year which I spent with them.
