Candidate Visit Weekend

Are CVWs still being offered for this school year?
Last fall CVW is in just over a week, 27-29 April. According to Eventbrite, signups end in two days and there are still spots left. No guarantees they'll let you sign up, but no harm in reaching out and asking

But aren't CVWs invitation only? You can't just sign up for a CVW.

I think what they are saying is that there is room in the sign up. When invitations are sent out the candidates pick one of several dates. If the date is full it won't let you sign up. The poster is letting you know when they check that sign up date, it's still available. They CVW is by invitation but also you can ask your admission rep for an invitation.

What should I ask in my email? That I got into NASS and was wondering if it would be possible for me to sign up for a CVW?

Reach out and request a cvw. Outline the reasons you would like to attend and why you are requesting it. Be prompt and to the point.

This should be directed to your admissions counselor for your region or your BGO(if you have submitted a PCQ)

Don’t over-complicate. They will know you got NASS. CVWs are offered fall and spring. Just express interest in an opportunity to experience USNA during the academic year and ask to be considered did a CVW invitation.

I think I'll do that after NASS. It just doesn't make sense for my family and me to drive the 2+ each way to the academy right now when I'm going to be down there for almost a week during NASS.

Curious why you asked about this school year then? Lots of great help here...use it wisely.
I spoke with my mom about the CVW and about requesting one (after RagingBull and CaptMJ responded) but she said it would be a waste of time for my family to drive the 5 hours down and back from the academy when I'm gonna be staying there for 6 days this summer anyways.

I totally appreciate that it is hard to do the travel back and forth- financially, missing work/school, juggling siblings' schedules, etc - but if you do get the opportunity to go, definitely consider it, even if your parents can't provide the transportation. You might be able to connect with a candidate here who could give you a ride? During DDs weekend, there were kids who traveled on their own to USNA via train, bus, and plane (and there were options to get picked up if needed). My DD found it valuable bc she had a "real life" experience (as opposed to a weekend with just SS attendees). On the parent side, the parent info sessions and Q&A were highly valuable and the info was more in-depth than what was offered in the closing session of SS. there is also usually an opportunity to do the CFA if you are looking to do that.

USNA recognizes that it is a heavy lift for families who live far away to get there and don't count it against you if you don't go, so don't worry about that- just wanted to encourage you to consider it and get creative about the transportation should the opportunity arise!!

My son attended last week and loved it! He did not do the CFA, as it was not offered that weekend.

My son was there as well and was offered (and did) the CFA! It was administered after breakfast Saturday morning.

Oh wow! I guess it depends which company they were placed with. I'm sure your son feels good that it was checked off the list! Did he love his visit there?

Yes, he is relieved to have completed it, but I'm guessing will do it, again, at SS! He enjoyed the visit, learned a lot and was very appreciative of how candid the Plebes were with him about plebe year. He is definitely going to finish the application once it opens up!

Did the CFA's they took on CVW count? I know my DS did it during his weekend, but the way he talked about it seemed like it was just a practice going through it, not a formal CFA. Heck, he said they did chin-ups rather than pull-ups. I wasn't sure if they're even recorded anywhere since the USNA portal for 2028 applicants isn't even open yet.

DS said there was an administrator who wrote everything down. I'm guessing they'll find out if it was recorded when their portal opens up. DS has sent in test scores, which he can't see whether they've received, yet, but hopefully they'll be recorded as well! DS was told you could take the CFA as many times as you like/need.

You will get a very good understanding of plebe summer through NASS and be with mids who have recently finished their plebe year. Though it is a different feeling when in session, you’ll get a solid understanding of life at USNA. In the fall would be the best time for a CVW since semester is wrapping up and the final weekend of April is largely a study weekend. In the fall, there are classes and sports and the Yard is a buzz. I have it on good authority that NASS has been a bit restructured in the last year to be more plebe summer like and less campy. Enjoy the privilege of NASS!
