My daughter will be attending a nomination ceremony from our US senator here in NC on Friday to officially receive her nomination to the USAFA. My daughter is nervous about officially telling everyone. For example her CAP squadron where she is cadet commander wants to run a story about it. She has not gotten her official acceptance letter from the USAFA and doesn't want them to run the story because she may not get in. Would you guys tell everyone or wait until the official letter from USAFA?

I would not run a story about receiving a nomination. Really nominations are not that big of a deal they are moreover a necessity. Get that appointment letter and let them go crazy with articles. Good luck to your daughter.

Is it newsworthy if Apollo 11 completes 30% of the journey toward the moon? Not everyone who receives a nom is accepted. I agree with your DDs Instincts and the poster above who pause to publish this. Get accepted and then call a press conference if you like. As a litmus test how would your DD feel if she doesn’t get accepted but for the next two years she constantly is asked about how it’s going at USAFA because you all allowed a trumpeting announcement of a mid process milestone? If she’d be proud then send it. If she’d cringe then skip. You asked so that’s one perspective. Good luck.

I say wait. From what I've noticed from my MoC, the nom announcements from his office are political maneuvers meant for his campaign. It's a nice photo op for the kids but I know they do not all get in.

Your daughter is in a tricky situation in that the nom event is in the public domain and therefore the resulting news coverage is not something she can control. However, she can control what she says --and she can choose whether to provide additional input. Any remarks she makes can reflect that her acceptance to the academy is not a done deal, something to the effect of: with the nom she is one step closer to her appointment, her dream, etc.

My opinion is to keep the Nomination low key. A nomination is a great next step to the ultimate goal of an appointment, but it’s not crossing the finish line.
When DS received a Principal Nom, we were over the top excited. Yet there was still uncertainty partially due to our lack of complete understanding of the process, and still no appointment. We chose to keep the information mostly within the family and downplayed the excitement. He was 3Q in our mind, but no 3Q confirmation had been received officially. Eventually the 3Q letter came, the MOC called, and he received the BFE. The wait seemed forever, but the real celebration and announcement could now be had. Then the bubble wrap came out…..

It all worked out in the end, but If no appointment was received for whatever reason, the PNOM would have been worthless.

Agreed with downplaying the nomination. One of our local kids had a big piece in the local rag after he received a principal nom. It also mistakenly said he had received an appointment.

Unfortunately, he didn't get 3Q'd and did not receive an offer of appointment.

So was a bit embarrassing.

What does 3q’d mean?

Your daughter’s thinking/nerves are normal. I expect my kids would have wanted to avoid publicity even after a full appointment. So, avoiding it before an appointment seems even more understandable. Most of these kids aren't heading down this road for the public recognition. Of course, that doesn't mean that they don't have to give back to their MOCs and/or the SAs by assisting with public relations by attending an event here or there.

So, if she wants your advice, counsel her to wait until she is comfortable.

It probably doesn't matter either way. USAFA is going to do what they want to do regarding appointment, so enjoy each milestone and make a big deal about if you like. YOLO!
