Hi All,

Are there boards/ websites or contacts with groups that help people retiring from the military see potential jobs posts? Do the armed services have offices that help to connect those coming home/ "getting out" in the months ahead with potential leads?

Thanks.

There are certain executive recruiter firms that specialize in JMOs. I’ve posted here occasionally about my time with a Fortune 200 company that regularly hired JMOs from all branches to fill positions in marketing, finance, operations, sales, etc. We used one of the better-known JMO specialists, which did a terrific job of matching candidates to employers/industries, and preparing them for interviews and negotiations. Every candidate I interviewed via this pipeline was very impressive in some way.

I’m on my third career, doing paid consulting contract work and pro bono work (advisory boards of non-profits, mentoring) in the area of military transition. These are just some snippets of what’s available.

All military members separating or retiring go through a transition program to get briefed on benefits, etc.

There are literally hundreds of mil/vet-related non-profits supporting post-military career services and networking.

Military bases offer courses in resume writing, job-hunting, applying for Federal service using veteran preference points, etc.

There is the DoD SkillBridge and internship program.

The afore-mentioned military placement firms include Lucas Group, Orion, Bradley-Morris, etc. The vet pays nothing. These groups are paid by the employers looking for vets with specific skill sets.

There are mentoring non-profits: American Corporate Partners, Veterati, eMentor and many more.

LinkedIn offers all kinds of bennies to veterans. There are hundreds of vet-affiliated career networking, job-matching, mentoring groups on LinkedIn. There are groups for veteran PMPs, for veteran entrepreneurs, etc. One example is Ringknocker.net, which is on LinkedIn. Despite the name, it’s not just SA grads.

Many companies have special vet career crosswalk portals.

Military and professional associations such as MOAA, AMVETS and DAV and many others offer career transition services, such as Recruit Military.

For veterans using their post-9/11
GI Bill educational benefits, there are campus chapters of Student Veterans of America.

There are the Service Academy Career Conferences (SACC). There is Corporate Gray. There is Military MoJo. There are VA and state veteran agency events.

There is the outstanding Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse U, offering free remote certificate prep courses and other great offerings.

Have some fun with Google.

Fantastic post, @Capt MJ. Bookmarking this one for when DD and DS decide (or have decided for them) that it’s time to move on. It’s amazing that an officer’s commission not only can get your career off to a great start, it can also help you get set up in the next phase.
