Cash in checking for plebes at USNA

I opened my NFCU account when I first went into the service - 35 years ago. They have been great.

Ditto -- 37 year ago!

NOTHING beats NFCU as a credit union for USN/USMC officers b/c they are on base at so many bases. And they are used to working with military members who may be on deployment or all of the other unique things that the military deals with.

I will say USAA is also good and does certain things that NFCU, as a credit union, can't/doesn't do. Most officers have both and use them for various things -- insurance, car and home loans, checking, savings, investments.

Now, whether you get a credit card from either is another question entirely -- that choice depends on lots of factors and there are other entities that may be more beneficial to particular people depending on rates charged vs. benefits earned.

Finally, mids won't be spending that much time/money overseas (if any) such that they need to fixate on "overseas benefits." And, when you're making $100/month (as a plebe), you don't need to worry about ATM rebates, or any rebates. You don't earn enough. Now, if your child is independently wealthy, that may be a very different story, but one that doesn't apply to the overwhelming majority of plebes/mids.
