Cell Provider for Device Preference

Any advice on which cell provider to choose as part of the tablet choice on the portal?

I think they are all equally poor. :(

Reception varies by barracks location and even different areas within same barracks. With Verizon reception was decent 1st semester, then poor 2nd semester when DS changed rooms.

No need to choose cell service, unless you want that capability for some reason. My DS got the iPad without cellular. He uses WiFi. He did get the personal WiFi access rather than just using the official network - it gives you more flexibility in what you can do.

So there is personal wifi access for non-government devices like their personal cell phone? How much does it cost? And does anyone know how much or how cellular service is added on the iPad. Is it a separate phone service from your parents cell phone service?
 
No, there is no personally wifi for phones. The wifi for the iPad is only for the iPads. Anything that is done on them can be seen by Gold Coats. For cell phones there is no wifi that can be used so expect your data usage to spike. There is a possibility that one day there will be wifi usage for phones, but it will be a long time before there is. I did not get cellular for my iPad since there is wifi for it here, I did go nearly 3 months with no wifi but the reason for that should be fixed indefinitely.

On our portal it gives the option for personal wifi. Is that the iPad wifi or are the adding it for personal devices this year?
 
Pay for the wi-fi; it comes out of your cadet account, and you wouldn't be receiving the money, anyway. As for cellular, unless you actually plan on using the cellular service outside of the academy, just stick with no cell service. Waste of money, in my opinion, since you are given wi-fi for all government devices.
 
As pointed out, cell phone service is spotty, even in HF.
Check with your provider. Most have a military discount. May be cheaper to have your DD/DS on their own plan.
Finally, most plans are going toward unlimited data.
