Hi everyone,

I just finished my second CVW and came back home with many thoughts. Firstly, I got my August SAT score back and plan to take it again in October. I'm extremely upset because I have been studying consistently for the SAT for over a year now and I have just accepted that I am not a good test taker. However, I plan on giving it all I have one last time. I am just worried that turning in my SAT score in october might be considered too late(?) I would have everything else submitted but my SAT score.

I took the CFA on Saturday and did not do well. I plan on retaking it this weekend but asked if this past CFA score were not to go on my application record. Now looking back on it, I think this might have been a mistake. I'm afraid admissions might think I'm not taking them seriously because I did not preform well/did not submit the CFA the past two CVWs I did.

Any advice/insight is appreciated. Thank you.

Since the application isn't due until January 31st, taking the SAT again in October (and even November and December) shouldn't be a problem. They aren't going to pick the whole class by the end of October and couldn't even if they wanted to since most MoC nominations won't be completed. Now the question I would wonder about is can you update your MoC application? I'm sure they are all different.

Have you tried the ACT? Some people really do better with one test over the other. Might be worth a try if you can do it. With the SAT, what worked for me was taking a timed practice test, seeing what I got wrong, and figuring out why I got it wrong. Then a week later, I did a different practice test, and continued until it was time to take the test for real. This worked well for me. but YMMV. Also, if your August SAT is good in at least one of the subjects, know that they superscore, so they will take the best score from all your tests if you submit multiple.

As far as the CFA goes, I wouldn't stress about it. I wasn't even given the option to add it when I went to my CVW. They said it was just for practice. Unsure if it was just my group for some reason, or the difference between a Spring and Fall CVW. I did take it at NASS though for my application. This is another thing that you should make sure that you can do the best you can on, as opposed to the earliest you can. Unless you think you can get your best score this weekend, I'd make it a practice and see what you need to work on.

Disclaimer: I'm also applying this cycle and can only give my thoughts and experience for what worked for me. I'm sure much wiser people will have better ideas to add. Good luck to you!

Would they let you do CFA during CVW ? DS is scheduled to his CVW in two weeks. He has not yet got a chance to do CFA.

OP: You should know by now (12 grade) if you are a poor test taker. Take the SAT and ACT 3 times. For many a formal study program, taught be a professional, provides better results. Retake the CFA in Oct. Note that some USNA Admissions Counselors my not update your CFA with the new score if that score is not substantially better ( Admissions Counselors do not allways update CFA scores).

Future Candidates: as we have said many times on this forum: do not wait to prepare for and take the CFA-it's tougher than it appears-even for athletes.

DS took the SAT 3 times. His first attempt was in the 1200's but his final attempt was 1530. We had him work with a tutor since we knew he understood the topics. The tutor helped him with his strategy and how to approach each section. If you have the means I would suggest using a tutor. He also spent a lot of time on Kahn Academy taking practice tests.

I was also a drag at the most recent CVW-- our plebes were told to take us to the CFA on Saturday morning. Can't compare to any other CVWs but that's what it was for me.

@chhappy, what company were you with?

Take both the ACT and SAT. Scores are super scored even between the two. As @Don't Give Up the Ship said, finding a tutor for a bit can also help. There are plenty online, of varying prices and offerings. 100$ invested in a tutor for a couple sessions can pinpoint problem areas and give you some strategies, for example.

Word of caution -- unless you were ill/sick or there was some anomaly, it is unlikely you will see significant improvements across one week. It might be a better investment to work on individual events or conduct a mock CFA and give it a few weeks before re-attempting an official CFA (aligning to what USNA1985 posted).
