Can my coach from a non-school sport administer my CFA or does it have to be a PE teacher/school coach?

My CFA was administered by my AFJROTC instructor, but I'm sure that your non-school sport coach would be allowed to administer it. If it still seems dicey to you, I'm sure your ALO and/or admissions counselor would be able to give you a more "concrete" answer on that.

(As always, someone may be able to provide a better answer on this)

I'm sure that's in the CFA instructions somewhere, so really you should go look at those and follow them - but wanted to say the answer is likely a no. I am certain my non-school tennis coach was NOT allowed to administer it because I remember having a hard time finding someone to do it, not having a great relationship with any of the school PE teachers...(longish story)

Our schools PE teacher administers the CFA. I know some have used ROTC. Contact your ALO if you have one yet.

From Academyadmissions.com

"Your examination may be administered by any physical education teacher, Service Academy Liaison Officer (ALO) or JROTC instructor. Any active-duty commissioned officer may administer the CFA for service members. It is your responsibility to arrange for a qualified person to conduct your examination."

I had a friend of mine who was a varsity wrestling coach at a local high school. He performed the CFA for my DS and one other who was attempting to go to USNA so it does NOT have to be a coach at your own high school but it does have to be a coach or PE teacher.

Look in Class of 2025 precandidate and candidate booklets when/if available. For 2024, the approved test administrators are listed, consistent with the current website. HOWEVER, you aren't alone if you don't have a PE teacher/JROTC instructor, so ask YOUR ALO and admissions counselor to confirm your choice of CFA administrator is acceptable.

This is also a great time to look at each SA's CFA rules. Find out the best strategy for CFA administrator and if you can submit CFA results from one SA to another.

As a homeschooler, I just had someone I knew who used to be a PE teacher administer it. There was no problem with that.

Although coaches are not listed as an option to be an examiner for the CFA, would it be possible for my school coach to be the examiner for my CFA? Or is this definitely not an option?

You will be required to contact you ALO this cycle and work with him/her closely as part of your admissions application. Query them! I do CFA's all the time for candidates for all the SA's that require it. I have a double hit: ALO and AFJROTC instructor!

I've had coaches do them for me as well.

Nothing to worry about.

Thank you for the information, I will ask my ALO for clarification. 👍

Did you get any clarification on this topic? My DS is a varsity athlete at a local college (he is a reapplicant) and there are not traditional PE instructors at the college... He was hoping he could use the wrestling coach. His ALO is about 3 hours away and he would prefer not to travel. Just curious if you received any word.

Thank you.

Hi! I emailed my ALO and he asked my admissions counselor who said that it was ok for me to use my coach. You might want to have your DS contact his ALO to ask just in case but that was what mine told me. Good luck to your DS!

Thank you so much! I think he already did and we are just waiting on a response.

my school currently is transitioning between PE teachers, would it be unethical to have my father who is an active duty commissioned officer do it? Or is there anything that says he can’t do it?

There may be nothing that says explicitly he can’t do it, the question is, should he. I think the assumption (at least mine, FWIW) is a family member is not appropriate, and that is his primary relationship to you. Not that he would not do an ethical, by-the-book administration, but again, should he. If a PE teacher is not available at all, or you can’t find a coach, the good news is your dad probably has plenty of officers at his duty station that would probably be willing, especially any SA grad familiar with the requirement.

That is my free unofficial two cents. Now, the best thing for you to do is to go to one of your official sources for information, and ask. If you have been reluctant to do that, then you already know the answer!

I’m pretty sure each SA has a stipulation that NO family member can administer the test. I would view that as ‘cheating’.
