Hey everybody,
I'm rounding the corner on my USMA Application, and I am only left with my CFA
Here are the scores I have
Basketball throw: 50ft
Pull-ups-10
Sit-ups-80
Pushups-42
Shuttle run- 9.2
Mile-5:32

I run track & xc so I am not the strongest, but I am worried that my CFA Will cause me to not get in. I have already received an LOA, and the CFA was the last part of my application. Nervous that these scores won't be good enough. What do you guys think?

I suspect that you are at a passing level (and for some events at a a very strong level) for everything, except maybe the basketball throw. The reality is that if you are deemed a competitive candidate (you are if you have an LOA) and you submit scores that aren’t passing, they will give you a chance to retake. So, I would say to submit these, assuming you feel you did your best.

Likely a passing score. Good luck.

Agree with the fact that the BB throw is the area you might need to retake. I had this occur last year with a candidate. My advice to him was to find a “thrower” (baseball player, QB buddy get access to a gym (outdoors is fine also) and go play catch. He spent a couple of weeks doing that and improved 15’ - and passed. I would NOT wait until you hear from Admissions on Pass/Fail as you might end up in a time crunch.

Good advice above. I believe your basketball is just above the minimum, so it would presumably pass. Your other numbers look generally very good. If you have to retake, the key to the BB throw is to continue to practice, but focus on technique. If you are not a natural "thrower" technique is the key. My son started practicing the basketball throw last summer and was averaging 40 feet. He took the test three months after starting his practice routine and threw the ball 70 feet. It's just a matter of figuring out how to make the "right" throw.

My DS passed with 50 ft. on his BB Throw (he was at the average or above on the rest with a max out on sit ups). Good luck!

Use the catapult method. Try not to throw it like a football or basketball but rather think of a medieval catapult. Cup the ball in your hand and wrist, keep your arm straight and lean back as far as you can, use your core to twist and launch the ball as far as you can. Practice to get the proper launch trajectory for maximum carry distance. You would need to be John Elway or Roger Clemens to outdistance the catapult method with a conventional throwing motion.

Yep, use Roadking's method. Don't use just your arm to launch the ball; use your abs to try to snap your whole upper body forward, throwing the ball as you go. Also, try to aim upwards instead forwards. I used both of these methods and I went from 27 ft to 51 ft in my last CFA (I'm a female).

There are a lot of videos online also demonstrating the best technique, like that mentioned above.
