CG Commandant should be full member of Joint Chiefs

The obvious problem is that the USCG is not part of DOD but rather under DHS, not sure of legal ramifications here but merging law enforcement issues with national security issues could be a problem

14USC1 establishes it as a military branch. 14USC89 establishes it as a federal law enforcement agency.

DOD doesn't do national security, it does national defense (facing in v. facing out). And other than the Air Force and the Space Force, all of the services (including the Coast Guard) are older than the DOD.

There are no issues. In fact, it would do DOD some good to have a more present force. Why this wasn't done long ago, I don't know, but I'd guess it's because DOD doesn't play well with others.

national defense is a national security issue, semantics. One of the primary missions of the Coast Guard is law enforcement so a question I would raise is does a DOD overlap potentially conflict with Posse Commitatus? By and large I would support having the Commandant on the JCS, the Coast Guard does not get enough respect or visibility.

Again, read 14USC1 and 14USC89. It's already military and LE, per U.S. law.

Now 14USC522, I do believe. But yeah, I agree. Even aside from this, though, the JCS wouldn't be a conflict with CG LE mission at all. The JCS is essentially an advisory board - there is no command power derived from being a member of the board, the authority is derived from being, in this case, the Commandant of the Coast Guard. Each JC still answers operationally to their respective Secretary, in this case the Secretary of Homeland Security. I think it's a great idea, and it's always surprised me that it wasn't already a thing.

Wait, did it change?

Ahhhh, Ex Gov. Charlie Crist. Charlie....is he a Republican this year? Is He a Democrat? Is he running for Senate or the House? Doesn't matter, let's pass some feel good legislation for the pensioners in Sarasota. And one of His favorite subjects, the Coast Guard. He's actually introduce 3 bills for the Coasties. How about these two, seems more like what we should be discussing on this board. FYI....Unfortunately He's sure we don't need a Heavy Ice Breaker in Florida.

H.R.6072

Coast Guard Retirement Parity Act

This bill modifies the Department of Defense Military Retirement Fund to pay for U.S. Coast Guard retirement and survivor benefit programs in the same manner as other branches of the military. Currently, Coast Guard retirement and survivor benefit payments come out of the yearly Coast Guard budget as a mandatory appropriation. Such payments are not paid in the event of a government shutdown; however, retirement benefits for other branches of the military are still paid through the Military Retirement Fund.

H.R.4413 - To authorize the Secretary of the department in which the Coast Guard is operating to establish a Coast Guard Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program in cooperation with Pinellas Park High School, and for other purposes.

but do USCG recruits still have to be over 6' tall? You know so they can wade ashore if the boat sinks ;)

Said no one clinging to the upside-down hull of a boat.

I remember once my DS was checking a bag on an outbound from Orlando back to where ever, and the attendant told him the CG wasn't Military and he had to pay to check his bags. For some reason, that kid could care less what anyone thinks and he just paid the $25.

hence the kidding ...

then again if you're clinging to a boat you probably don't care if it's a hose dragger, fish cop or what not hauling them out of the water

Ladies and gentlemen, I present a comprehensive history of jokes made about the Coast Guard since 1790! We all applaud your originality :p

Here is a link for one of the “Space Force” scenes.
We laugh at it, and we make fun of the Coast Guard as we do a sibling. But heaven help anyone outside the services who makes fun of the Coast Guard in front of me. As a long time boater, someone who grew up and worked on the water, I always admired the courage it took to go out on the water in weather when I wouldn’t leave my house.
