Our son was notified last week that he was not accepted to USAFA. His admissions counselor also told him he was “ too smart” for the Prep School.. I know that some students decline their spot due to choosing between Academies. What are the chances he is contacted again and offered a spot before they start in June? We are not counting on it obviously, but does that happen?

The prep school is usually reserved for candidates that are not qualified in some area. Your counselor stating that he is "too smart" tells me that he was qualified but beat out by better candidate this year.

While exceptions happen every year, they are few and far between. The best advice is to switch gears as Plan B is now Plan A.

USAFA makes offers and has a pretty good idea of their yield. Pretty unlikely you will get a call with an offer just because someone chose another SA.

It has happened before but I would not expect it.

Go with plan B. If plan A should come back up with an offer you can always switch gears again. It's highly unlikely that it will happen though.

Funny my DD was also denied and told she was also too smart for Prep school from her ALO . I thought this was rather strange as well.

What do you mean “too smart for prep school”? If they really wanted to go to a place like USAFA, and prep school was an option for them, why wouldn’t they go? No one is “too smart” for prep school, that isn’t what prep school is about.

We were told her scores were too high for prep school, that she was too smart. I'm not sure how to take that even if she received her TWE

Again, the prep schools are intended to help candidates who are not academically qualified. The "too smart" just means they were academically qualified but got beat out by a more qualified applicant.

+1 to USMA 1994. Prep school is not an option for academically qualified applicants.

To expound, the prep school is for applicants who tend to struggle academically or people such as prior enlisted who have been out of an academic environment for several years. Quite simply, your DS would likely be bored and unchallenged at a prep school. While monetarily it can be frustrating, I believe the Academy would rather see him succeed in rigorous courses at a 4 year college then reapply.
