My son just completed/submitted applications for all 3 nomination sources.

We live in a very competitive state where there are so many smart students applying for services academies. So now I am worrying "what if" he doesn't get a nomination from senators or congressmen.

He already has received the presidential nomination, what are the chances that he will be one of the 100 appointees from many received presidential nominations?

He is a senior in one of the top 5 magnet high schools
He is applying for West Point and USNA

- 1530 SAT (800 Math, 730 English)
- 3.8 weighted GPA ( This concerns me the most, his GPA is not that strong due to the rigorous courses his school
Offers)
- His school l doesn't offer class ranking
- Took 7 APs (all 5's) and taking 4 this year
- Club President
- Varsity football (lettered)
- Varsity Lacrosse (lettered)
- leadership roles on several other clubs at school
- 2nd degree black belt
- Presidential Award on 300+ hours he volunteered

What are his odds of getting in to either school with the presidential nomination? Can he be one of the 100?

His application looks strong. So does every other applicant's application. Can he be one of the 100? Of course. Is it likely that he would be one of the 100? Who knows? No one here can answer your question as we don't know what the competition looks like, we don't know what kind of recommendations your son has, and we don't know what the class composition looks like nor how he would fit into it.

Your son appears to be doing everything he can to maximize his chances for an appointment. Keep improving the things he can control and don't worry about the rest. Make sure he continues to work on backup plans, including AROTC and NROTC. Good luck to your son.

Your son's application is almost identical to my son's. Presidential nom, all apps complete. We also live in a highly competitive district. Not a black belt, and sub 4 year varsity wrestling for football and include lax and cross country captain. The more I see of others' applications, the more I believe that most of our kids' applications are very similar and there is no way for us to know what the academies will do. Only the academies know the secret ingredients. Good luck to your son!

Your GPA reported by your school is not that relevant. The academy takes your school information, what types of classes were offered, did you take the challenging course, how many students go to four year colleges, your class rank, etc, puts it in a black box and develops a profile. If your school does not rank, they will estimate based on test scores so you might get a break there.

It is impossible to know but his chances seem good at competing for other nominations as well as the Presidential.

Thank you and Good luck to your son as well!!!

Our daughter is in the waiting game also...the hardest part as it's still fresh from a few years ago waiting for our son's acceptance! Moderate district as far as competitiveness:

Has a presidential nom- all green on the app
4.o unweighted GPA taking 6 total AP/the rest honors classes
6th in her class at college prep HS
2 sport varsity athlete past 4 yrs (captain both junior & senior year)
Girls State
NHS, Youth in Government, and other school clubs etc
national club team for volleyball when HS team out of season
sibling currently at WP so she really really knows what the lifestyle is like and so badly wants to attend
29 superscore on ACT (she has never been a great standardized test taker so is taking it one last time)

Very similar to all these other awesome overachievers on these threads:) So she waits....good luck all!!!

I would suggest that she try to take the ACT again before the end of the year. She is a solid candidate but if she got the ACT to the 33 range she would be even better.

Test scores are the one thing that can set you apart from everyone else.
