My son just completed his first year of college on a 4-year ROTC Scholarship Marine ground contract. He has recently been considering trying to change to an air contract in the Marines, but was told the only likely way for that to happen was for him to find a person with a 4 year ROTC air contract who wants to switch to ground. Is that accurate? Just looking for any assistance on the possibility and process for this change. Thanks for the help.

I do not believe that is accurate and suggest your son speak to the MOI or AMOI at his unit. They can best advise how and when a NROTC-MO applies for an aviation guarantee. It is a separate process and not associated with the initial NROTC application process.

Agree with MOApplicant. Folks don't enter NROTC MO with a contract for an MOS. Air contracts can be obtained while in NROTC. Anyone without an air contract doesn't know their MOS until after commissioning and TBS. Thus there is no ground contract to swap with in any case.

Agree with the above. My DS is a NROTC-MO with an aviation contract. Your MOS will be decided after TBS, unless you have signed an aviation contract. Make sure your DS understands the time commitment for USMC aviation.

@EEBTTF - my DS is a USMC Artillery Officer (HIMARS). He makes some comments about "the king of battle" but I can't hear him because of all the POG noise in the background.

No one starts NROTC-Marine Option with an air contract. Most pick them up while in their first few years. His MOI should be able to assist with that. For the most part if someone passes the ASTB and meets requirements, they will get the air contract.

@NavyHoops is spot on as usual. My DS took the ASTB and then had to pass a pre-flight physical before signing contract.

For a random point - he just got back from Pendleton last night and we are going to watch Top Gun II tonight.

How did he enjoy Pendleton this year?

Air contracts can also be obtained at TBS if you come in as a ground contract. Air contracts can also give up their spot at TBS if the ground MOS bug bites them while they are there.

I think he had a good time. Since he did not get to do COTRAMID- it was very similar to last summer. Next summer OCS. Time is flying by. I hope your DS is enjoying his new post.

I'm sure he brought a more knowledgeable and discerning eye to this summer's training. OCS is the biggie. Hope you can make the graduation.

So actually all DS has had to do is call in every day and let them know he's alive. He started an online course and three compressed courses are starting in July. He and his wife are loving DC. Their furniture, etc came last week so they're still settling in.
