Citadel v. Norwich. Input please.

Norwich will be switching football conferences in 2017. Check out this article: http://oc.norwich.edu/blog/norwich-football-to-join-newmac-conference-in-2017/ And yes, hockey is BIG time there. They are D3 in hockey, but I have been told that they are competitive enough to play D1. According to this same source, they do not play D1 due to travel and Title 9 issues. But that is only hearsay, so take it with a grain of salt. Even their hockey club team is outstanding and loaded with talent. It is with great excitement that students attend both varsity and club hockey games. They also do very well in Rugby. Their rugby teams are D2. http://norwichathletics.com/sports/mrugby/2008-09/news/divisionII_06-15-09

What athletic conference is Norwich in and what sports do they play? Imagine hockey is big-time there...

Most of Norwich's teams are D3 except for Men's Rugby which is D2 and Women's Rugby which is D1. Hockey is very big here, every year the program is very successful, they could easily play D1 but as was mentioned above why they can't.

I know all students at the Citadel, both cadets and otherwise, play on Citadel athletic teams. Do all the students at Norwich, cadets or not, have that same opportunity?

Norwich Cadets.png Got it; cool and learned this was the mascot for Norwich.

Somewhat. I applied to both citadel and Norwich and got accepted. Norwich gave a $96,000 presidential scholarship. They are both great schools but I pick Norwich over citadel because I live in New England. I am however seeking admission to West Point and the Naval Academy. It depends on you.

My DS is currently a Rook at Norwich. He applied last year to USNA as well. Thought he would reapply this year to USNA but got to Norwich and loves it so much he only reapplied for NROTC scholarship. We are so impressed with Norwich. It is an amazing opportunity. He is extremely happy. Loves the challenge. The stories have been hysterical. His Cadre have been very tough but incredibly fair. Great University!

It is amazing that plan B, or even Plan C can turn out to be Plan A+++ after all!

Hopefulmomma,
If your son is going ROTC, the two schools have virtually the same opportunities. In fact, the navy MECEP and STA-21 options are available at both schools and are nearly on PAR in terms of history/quality of graduates. A visit to both is definitely the way to go. There are unique cultures, traditions, and "feels" you can only get out of a visit, but these schools are almost identical twins except one is in the northeast and one is in the southeast! Either choice is a good call! ;)

A great deal of misinformation in this thread re: Norwich
Athletics: Norwich is a Division III institution. NCAA rules now forbid single teams from "playing up" to a higher division. Rugby (both genders) is a varsity sport at Norwich (funded and staffed). However, rugby is not an NCAA sport, and our teams compete, mostly, against club teams (volunteer or part-time coaches, minimal if any recruiting, etc). The D1 and D2 posts above are not entirely accurate in terms of the level played.
Both hockey programs (men/women) are VERY good. Perennial national championship contenders. They play D3 because we are a D3 school, period. Travel, etc has nothing to do with it.
Football has won 4 conference championships since 2009 and has reached the postseason 7 consecutive years (the only New England program to do so).
Men's soccer is a solid and competitive program, as is cross country.
Men's lacrosse has had some good years lately under their current head coach.

Boring: there are, indeed, lounge spaces with pool tables, etc available on campus. Rooks are not permitted to visit these until they achieve recognition. Rookdom stinks; it's supposed to. However, upon recognition they're always glad they did it.

Room/Board: Norwich does give the I.D. White scholarship to ROTC scholarship students. DoD pays tuition, NU pays room/board. It's a free ride*.

*If I recall correctly, AFROTC only pays 80% tuition, other branches 100%

If they are not talented enough, athletically, for varsity competition, there are multiple club sports available. There are also a number of other, non-athletic, clubs.

All students have the opportunity, not all students participate.

My DS did a Fly-In to Norwich for Veteran's Weekend activities. We live in the Keys so take the limited flights on both ends and basically the best flights still had him doing 13 hour flight days bookending a night and day event. To actually get there in time for event and leave at end would have him doing two nights in airports as in literally 12 hour layover one and a 9 hour layover other... They let him come the day before the event had his recruitment officer pick him up at the airport and drive him to the school he was hooked up with a Rook in Corps of Cadets to spend night both Thursday and Friday, He was given a class schedule and was able to sit in on classes with students both COC and others in the Physics program as well as Psycology since he is Psy if AROTC and Physics if NROTC So although he had to leave 2 hours early on Saturday he had already had a much more realistic look much like the Candidate Weekend at the Naval Academy. I am a Disabled Veteran unable to work so economically a mortgage payment sized trip expense was not something we could afford but they do have a program that they will refund some or all of the flight and provide the transport to/from the airport if you have an economic need. Since my son also has been given the Merit 23K approx a year scholarship that is still 20K a year so I know in our case it will come down to if either A/N ROTC national or school based ROTC scholarships are offered. Being from an area where till this month we have not seen more than a dozen days in 60s for 3 years He was interested in the school just because is a school a few NJROTC cadets from his unit have gone to but it moved to his number 1 during the visit he even liked it better than USNA visit and his super super loves it and is feasibility wise the #1 AUM. And we are talking he calls his AUM PMS to just talk about what is going on and to even check on his daughter that was sick and considers him a mentor .. that will tell you how much the visit excited him for possibility of Norwich. It is an extremely respected school in the military. The Cold Mountain training preps the COC for one of the least known and very selective Mountaineering Training actually a bigger failure rate than swamp phase for Rangers. The Psychology bachelor program DS is wanting to be able to have scholarship to do is actually above the masters program at Harvard and Yale! For most programs these kids (I say cause I'm ancient) are doing masters level thesis requirements to get their BA/BS. That is why we are desperate to at least even get the financial aid packets in hopes that if he is not getting a national ROTC scholarship he has school aid enough to go. But was not even on his radar (like AUM as well) and visits to the schools made them his top "Dream schools" when he really had not cared so much where he went so long as he could go somewhere and get a degree that he could use in a military career.

Thank you for everyone's input. My son has decided on The Citadel due to the ease of travel to and from home and for the region of the country it's in. He intends to live and work in the south.

He enjoyed the pre- knob stay over, and just signed up for CSI

My DS' best friend is going Citadel tell your DS to look for a girl from Key West. She is going NROTC great young lady she is one of the leaders in the NJROTC unit bery squared away but also super funny.
