Does anyone know the specifications of the laptops that we will be getting? Last year they had it in the logging in book, but I didn't see it this year. Thanks!

I believe it is on page 19 of the Logging in book, it says the specs. as of March 2011

It is in the logging in 2015. Also, note, the student's won't own the laptop starting 2015. At least that's the way I read it.

So, do you think that 1400 computer fee will come right off? Wishful thinking. Any ideas how this will impact the fee structure? I believe I also read they are considering switching to a primary care insurance model. I can imagine that should come in about, oh I don't know, 1400? :thumb: I know, either way we are very blessed to at least have a start at this education. Holding my breath!

"1. Starting with the Class of 2015, incoming Plebes will be issued a laptop purchased at government expense. The laptop will remain government property, subject to federal regulations, throughout each midshipman’s enrollment at the Academy.

Don't have a clue if it will affect the fees. I'd be happy with what you are paying....Class of 2011 plebe year we paid $7,800 for fees.....yea....

Kpmom2011, gulp! Yes, I will be happy with whatever we get.

(2011-v-2015 laptops... why the change? It's a good thing)

When the parents bought the PC previously, there was a sticky question on what DoIT could 'mandate' to be loaded... since the PCs were NOT paid for by the academy.. they just acted as a 'bulk buying agent', and passed the costs on to us.

However, the other academies, as well as corporate America, provide computer systems... and DoIT could darn well put on them what the want... since THEY own 'em. It's basically just getting aligned like everyone else is.

FEEs should go DOWN, although you may find RENT of equipment goes up:)

The other academies, DOD, don’t actually “pay” for the computers. They loan the cadets/mids the funds to pay for their computers and expenses and then deduct it from their pay allowances. So a cadet at West Point who earns approx 900.00/month will net out 150.00. My DS’s best friend is at WP and explained this in minute detail to me. The loan, or pay advance as WP calls it, is approximately 5,600.00.
