Class of 2015 - Mailbox Stalkers Club

Antfeb, keep in mind that that was the scholarship application deadline. At the school my son applied to, joining the AFROTC is simply a matter of enrolling in two specific AFROTC class offerings. That was all that was needed to be "enrolled" in AFROTC. Don't know if all colleges are the same, but can't imagine too much different. I would definately check into it. DS got a twe for the AFROTC scholarship, but it encouraged him to apply for the in-college scholarship for next year. You will certainly want to look into this. I thought the 3-year scholarships were not really offered anymore, but apparently I was wrong (thankfully). Good luck!

HANG IN THERE! DD has AFROTC Scholarship she has not accepted yet. She will decide by next week. SO, there could be another scholarship out there floating around. :thumb:

Does anyone know how many??

Does anyone know how many Type 1 AFROTC Scholarships are offered each fall? My son received a Type 1 AFROTC and Type 1 NROTC Scholarship however the Navy scholarship dictates the University he must attend and the Air Force allows him to select his school, provided they offer Air Force ROTC. I was just curious since the general trend at USAFA seemed to be to downsize the 2015 class and I was wondering if ROTC was also downsizing?

There are some threads in the ROTC section that talks about the reduction in the AFROTC Enrollment Allocations. This year most detachments got less than 60% of their allocations. There are less scholarships as well.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread too much lately, so maybe I missed it...

But did anyone get a letter about Falcon Foundation or AFA Prep School acceptance? I think I've been hesitating to pay a deposit and acceptance for college because I haven't heard of those letters going out yet.

There is a thread about USAFA Prep School Offer Acceptances, but the last post regarding an offer was three weeks ago. Anyone else out there get an offer lately?

I have not seen any postings lately about Prep School/Falcon Foundation offer letters. Counselor told us they would decide on that the last week of April so I imagine there will be some activity the last week of April and first 2 weeks of May.

For those of you who received the QNV (like us) and had alternative plans in place but not finalized, I'm standing on the sideliness yelling in a megaphone with cheerleader pom-poms in place yelling:

"LET'S ALL GET CRACKING ON ALL THE PAPERWORK! PRIORITY ONE! KIDS AND PARENTS SHIFT GEARS AND WRAP UP EVERYTHING FOR PLAN B-apply for every scholarship you can get if not already done, read read read, time for Total Immersion for the new school. Are you wearing your college T-Shirts yet?" Wrap that up, and than if in your long term goals, see you on the REAPPLYING thread. I'm making brownies for the Reapplying Club right now....

You guys will hopefully be hearing from me about prep school here in the next few weeks.

They say that the prior enlisted appointments will begin to be sent out on April 15 until May 15. Still keeping my fingers crossed. Sooooo anxious!

QNV

FP's Mom here. Got the QNV letter in VA yesterday. Not too surprised since I have been reading the thread. DS is moving on. Put housing deposit down on option 2. Its nice to have a secured path. If prep school comes calling, he will have a decision to make but right now, moving on. Congrats to all the appointments out there. You must be great kids - I am certain our AF is in great hands! :smile:

waiting

Hello all. I have been reading the posts and have mixed emotions. My sons ALO said acceptace letters wouldn't be sent out till April but the class is mostly full? This doesn't make sense. There is alot of different info out there. I am so sick like many of you that my son may not make it. I am so heart broken b/c he really wants this. But I realize all these kids do too! Gosh, this is tough. We do have a back up plan though, he has been accepted into the engineering program at WVU and has been offered a 10thou$ scholarship. However he didn't go after any extra scholarships b/c he thinks he is getting into AFA. You know, you try to tell em but they won't listen. Anyway, have been stocking the mailbox and just wish something would come so we can get on with this. An academic and dorm deposit is due soon at WVU but dont want to loose that money if he gets in.

Hi FuturePilot mom, my son also got QNV letter yesterday in CA, does it say like this below ?
We regret to inform you that we are not able to offer you an appointment to the Air Force Academy this year. Your Excellent record qualifies you for admission, but We are limited in size by public law and cannot appoint everyone who is qualified.

your record received an in-depth review by a panel of experienced Air Force Academy faculty and staff and you can take pride in having met all of the Academy's entrance requirement-- an achievement that ensures you will succeed wherever you decide to attend college. With approximately 13,000 outstanding young people competing to be among the 1120 admitted, the competition for appointments was extremly keen this year.

While the selection process is essentially complete, we will notify you immediately if you are chosen to fill a vacancy another candidate declined an appointment. In the meantime, if you are eligible, we would urge you to consider AFROTC as an avenue to an Air Force Commission. This would provide you with an opportunity to apply again, to possibly receive an additional nomination, and improve your admissions record. You should be aware that approximately 30 percent of each year's class do not enter directly from high school.

Hi Redwings8808, yeah it is so sad to see my son yesterday. He is so determined that he is going to AFA.
I hope you will get BFE soon. good luck to you and your son.

Antfeb and futurepilot,
So sorry to hear this. Sounds like the declination letters are rolling out :( I wish your children good luck with their college plans. Even if B doesn't get in Im glad he has an option. As for reapplying, he wants to but I think not. But it is his choice. Good luck guys.

This thread has been going for a long time, and I feel that issues are being lost in the pages.

First off, like anything in life you need to lick your wounds. It hurts, however, we all know that the initial pain dissipates and you may feel differently tomorrow.

Take the time to lick your wounds. Accept that TODAY'S dream died.

When you are ready, accept that TOMORROW'S dream is alive and well.

Some of you did plan B and applied to colleges with strong AFROTC programs, some didn't.

Address now Plan B.

Is AF totally out of the picture?
~~~If so, than be thankful that you didn't get into the AFA. It is not 4 yrs of your life, it actually can be 14 yrs of your life (Pilot commitment is 10 yrs after graduation). You don't get to say I want to be stationed at Elmendorf or Ramstein, you get stationed where they say you go to.
If you can close the door on the AF because they did not give you an appointment, than it wasn't a fit IMPO.
Are you going to go AFROTC and reapply?
~~~If so contact the incoming det now. Be frank with them and tell them this is your intention. There is this fallacy that if you do tell them you screwed the pooch with the det. That is a fallacy. They want happy ROTC cadets, and they know yr after yr some will apply. By talking to them now, you HELP yourself/child. You inform them that this is an AF commitment issue, and not a money issue. I have never heard of a Commander purposely not noming a cadet for ROTC.

Be open to AFROTC.
~~~ There are many cadets who walk in and are unsure if this is the right path over the AFA. Many that walk in with the intention to re-apply to the AFA.
They are 18. They still have to emotionally grow. Follow their lead. Just because they swore up and down the lamp post that they would never stop until they got into the AFA in April, doesn't mean that they will feel the same come September.
As a HS student they can only envision college, as a college student in ROTC they experience it. The child you drop off at college is not the same you talk to 30 days later. JMPO, but with 2 in college, those 30 days were the biggest personal growth experience I ever saw with our kids. They truly were now adults in how they carried themselves, how they thought, and their goals.
FINALLY, as a spouse of an AF officer for 21 yrs, a mom of an AFROTC cadet (he opted that route), I can tell you the hardest thing is to relinquish control and live by fate.
It absolutely stinks! Yet, the one thing I know is I can get on my rooftop and scream, but that won't change a thing. I can pray to G*D and it is still going to be the same result. I can trust in fate and what will be their path and know that they will end up where they were meant to be. If you can't trust in fate now, ask yourself if they want to fly fighters how you will feel when they are in combat? I can tell you, because I saw it 1st hand, there are spouses and parents who believe they were trained and will get home. They worry, but they live. Than there are those who are obsessed with the news and fear when they hear that they will be doing no-fly zone.
I had the in laws who were the latter, and I finally said to them if I obsessed over his career/flying I would go insane. I had
to believe in fate, and I accepted the fact that if this was the day, I could lock him in the closet, but it was still going to be the day. Morbid I know. However, it also was how we felt about our DS. If he was meant to get UPT it was meant to be and that was his fate. Yes, as an AFROTC cadet he got UPT. Now we say if he is meant to get his dream airframe, it was meant. Nothing, we do as parents will have an impact. It is all on him, and even in that situation he could graduate no. 1 out of UPT, but if the AF only has heavies, he will fly heavies...that is fate.
Trust me the trusting in fate lowers your blood pressure and the bottles of wine you need to accept reality.:wink: Also anyone ever associated with the military will tell you that it is not what you know, it is also timing (aka fate).
Think about it, if your child was born 1 yr earlier the appointment rate would have been higher...in other words fate.
FP and RW,
My heart is with you! My son back in 2009 and my daughter 2011 did not get in. My son started his dream back in the 5th grade, my daughter a little later. It is so strange how this happens sometimes. The year my son applied no one from his school got into USAFA. That includes the two valedictorians. Where are they now? One went to west point, one went to USNA but left after basic and picked up her full ride soccer scholarship to a private university, and my son took his full ride to Notre Dame. All three are very happy with the path they are on. The shock of not getting in is rough at first, being so close to the end of their senior year, and having to wait all year for the results. But they buried themselves into their activities and we all did a lot of laughing and cheering for plan B. Tailwind is right. All usafa stickers came off the cars (except husband's alumni plate) and ND went up. T-shirts were worn and everyone was excited for the unkown. Your sons will have an incredible future.
I wouldn't say if you choose a different route that the Academy wasn't a perfect fit. With today's economics and difficulties on families you shouldn't feel guilty taking a better deal. It doesn't mean your initial dream was any less than those who are just going to re-apply.
This is coming from a spouse of Air Force active duty 27 years and son in AFROTC which he loves.
No offense, but I am a little confused with post 1418.
I agree with
Just lost on:
I don't know of a sweeter deal than the AFA. Maybe I am missing a beat, not trying to be antagonistic, just saying, even with an AFROTC scholarship, any type, and merit the AFA economically is still the best route.
I have ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY no bone in this fight. DS is AFROTC 2012, scholarship with a UPT AFSC. I just don't understand that there is a better fiscal deal out there.
Again, the AFA is all costs covered and a stipend.
I do agree as an AFROTC mom, and AF wife who's DH was AFROTC and flew the F-15E, plus our son getting UPT out of AFROTC for 2012, that the dream does not die with the choice of AFROTC over AFA.
Also, as anAFROTC mom I will say every yr from our DS's det they have sent at least one cadet to the AFA. The path does not end today with the TWE. It ends when you don't apply. The cadet this yr got the ROTC nom, they also got principal from the MOC. You will never know unless you throw your hat in the ring.
